    4wd?

It has what's called an open differential. Both wheels will not spin at the same time all the time, but will sometimes. If one front tire has traction and the other doesn't, it will only spin one tire.

How many hours before it dies?

I agree with Billdog. Ya can't go by just the hour meter. We have a L3750 from the late 80's with over 3000 hours and the engine is fine. Age & neglect has done way more damage than the hours of use.

Considering upgrading from B7800HST to L3800HST

For my needs the L3800 is on the small size, but got a great deal and couldn't pass it up. I was going to use it as a stepping stone and trade it in on a larger one in a few years. Have a new plan now, will keep the L3800 & get a larger one in a few years. :D

    Running in 4WD

I've experimented with this. No weight on the 3 pt and the tractor sucks at loader work. 400-500 lbs is a huge help. 600-1000 lbs makes this size rig a true work horse, puts the right amount of weight on the rear axle & takes considerable weight off the front axle.

    new L3200

Like said, hang some weight on the 3 pt to counter the FEL. Even with a empty bucket the FEL takes weight off the rear & puts it on the front axle. With 500-1200 on the 3 pt these small rigs are a completely different animal. Loaded rear tires & wheels weight add greatly to traction and...

    Rear Wheel Weights

I also prefer OEM on most everything, but am considering different on the weights. Might change my mind though. Haven't ordered them yet.

where and who builds the L4600?

Built by Kubota. They have a new plant in Thailand and one or two in the US now. I hear the 4600 is built in Thailand, some L tractors are built here, some in Japan. All are the same high quality.

    Rear Wheel Weights

I personally would not use sodium chloride, but do use a ethyl alcohol water mix. Doesn't freeze & adds plenty of weight. Fixin to add wheel weights also.

    L3800 Used Price

Little high on the L3800, Better if it was around 17-17.5K. I paid 15K for my 2011 L3800DT w/loader w/14 hours a little over 2 years ago.
