In addition to the shear bolt on the driveshaft I also have shear bolts on the shaft that goes from the gearbox to the chain sprocket and another one on the, what is called in the manual the "fan". This may be what he is referring to.

Thanks for the picture. That is the fan. It looks like something welded to the tip of the blade, perhaps to balance it? It does not look like anything you could torque. There is likely a shear bolt thru the fan to shaft junction that would be torqued to a spec.

No, it’s on the fin itself. Only on one though. Manual talks about torque it to a certain amount.
If the manal IDs it then follow the manual. I can't see any mention of it in the parts diagrams available online for that blower. Only for the impeller fan mounting bolt.
My guess is for balancing it? Maybe ask a dealer what it is? That's a weird way to balance something that's going to wear it smooth and maybe even have a rock or something break it off?
I'd add some welds if it needed a balancing.

Yeah, went back and read the manual again. Misunderstood what was said. Would have been nice to identify it in the manual to let users know what it’s for. Thanks everyone for helping me on this.

My guess is also a weld to balance the impeller. It's at a good place (back of the blade) so nothing should affect it.

My next question. How often do you check the gear box oil? I know what the manual states but wondering if it needs checking more often. Just checked mine yesterday. Was a little low. The guy who I bought it off didn't do much maintenance since he let it sit outside for about 2 years. States he used it once, then put it aside as he didn't like it. He put a plow on his truck since.

I change it every spring before putting it away and check it again in the fall when setting it back up. More because I want to avoid any moisture issues than any leakage of lubricant -- that would be readily apparent. There's not too many places the gear lube can go and the box is right there easy to see.

Sitting outside for two years - I'd change it.
Won't take gallons so cheap insurance.
Then you KNOW it's right and one less thing to worry about.

Next question. The coupler that goes on the PTO shaft. Are gorilla hands required? Have tried many times without luck. So I pull back that coupler then lift the blower slowly to get it to seat in. Coming off is ok though.

I most definitely NEVER have the tractor running while attaching PTO shafts to my tractor.

NEVER.

That's out of the way, now I'm assuming you're running the tractor to use the 3-point to raise the blower while attaching to the tractor PTO?

DON'T DO THAT.

With the tractor turned off, the PTO driveline coupler to tractor PTO shaft needs to be fully engaged and lockpin snapped into place, then tugged at to make sure it's locked.

Then start the tractor and while idling slowly engage the pto shaft to test the blower operation. From the tractor seat.

And yes gorilla hands help. I f***ing hate driveline attachment, but it's slowly getting easier. THe main thing is getting into a comfortable, well lit position under the driveline so it can be manipulated with the least effort.

Do you have the style with a collar that pulls back to retract some balls? You may need to clean or lube things. I prefer the style with the simple spring loaded pin on one side.

I have the shaft installed on the PTO shaft and pushed as far as I can get it. I pull that lock piece back all the way but the dam thing won’t lock in. Tractor is off. I have lubed the shit on the PTO shaft and the snap ring. Still can’t get it on all the way by hand. Am I missing something? I pull that ring all the way back. What I did was start the tractor, leave it on idle, pull back on that ring, then lift the blower slowly. It pushes it in and locks in. Not the safest way to do this.

I do have that. It was dry when I got it. Used 90 weight oil and soaked it good while moving it to get a good lube on it.
