If you suspect a wiring problem, I would suggest trying the "wiggle method" to try and locate the problem. It's cheap and fast. Just start it and begin "wiggling wires" until it stalls, then try to duplicate it a few times if you find a "suspect area" Only works about 2% of the time, but like...

Although I have no first hand knowledge, I think there are tachometers that run off the alternator that you can use. Obviously the standard, "ignition fired" ones will not work. This one "claims" to work on diesels...
