It is, every battery manufacturer has tons of 'technical data' on what they make and it's important that the charger be designed for that SPECIFIC battery. For my remote energy control systems ,3 decades ago, I spent months pouring over data, then decided on a Gates SLA battery, same as used by the USA Nuke Subs. Designed /built charger to THEIR specs and gee whiz the batteries performed even BETTER than what was published !

BTW self discharge can only done with the battery totally disconnected from the 'product' and the 'charger'. One reason car batteries die is that even though the key is off, car not used, several computers are still active, radio,alarm system,etc.

On another note, apparently for some, if not most people, gas prices do not matter, they will still waste it. I took a trip last weekend to Tennessee to pick up a Tar River SAYA 505 pulling my small flatbed. I was doing 72 and being passed like I was doing 50. Not just by small cars, but by pickups and SUV's that guzzle gas.

As long as there are fools like that wasting gas, prices will stay high since they do nothing to conserve it.
Gee you are worried about people driving to fast and wasting fuel but then you aint payin for their fuel. And yet you drive some place to buy something made in CHINA , it maybe assembled here but everything is made in china,, kinda hypocritical dont ya think

The post I replied to was about electric vehicle batteries. So what is the "technical data" on a Tesla battery?

Why yes it was, Dealt with Tim. Even let me park my trailer in the back overnight so I didn't have to worry about it at the motel.

I have a drone with a similar type of battery. Those batteries should be kept charged at about 50%, if put away with a full charge they have a controller that will slowly discharge the battery to the proper storage level. I wonder if the EV's have such a system. I also wonder how much is lost over time from natural self discharge, it may be small but it should be public information.

Lithium batteries don't self discharge, thats the beauty of them, however, if stored at full capacity, they break down over time. Proper storage is 3.8v per cell, or 80% capacity. Store them under or over 80% and they slowly deteriorate. Once at 80%, left unplugged and alone, come back in a few years and they will still be at 80%.

IF a US company COULD produce this exact No Till Drill, that did not cost 3-4 times as much, then I would wholeheartedly purchase it. The fact is, No one else makes one like this for the price point, and thats why I got it.

Woods makes something similar, but not exact, but its twice the price IF you can find one. The majority of the small 3 point drills require tilling the soil first, which is what I am trying to avoid, otherwise I could have saved a few grand and bought a used Woods I found, but it would not work fir what I am looking to do. Oh and it is made from parts produced in China.

At least it isn't a John Deere that is built from China parts. Yet here we are, on a forum, for a Japanese made, not American made, tractor.

You'd have to specify the exact battery in question and the environment it's in. temperature, humidity, steady state or variable, air quality and makeup are some of the factors that affect 'discharge rate' of all batteries.

One company now makes 'state machine' based chargers as the 'computer' based ones are easily hacked and parameters can be changed. Sigh, reminds me of the diode based boot loaders for PDP8s. What's old is new again....

I wondered about heat and cold affecting these awesome electric cars. Laymans terms and experience. Winter or extrem hot summers kill your 12 volt battery every few years. I know its not the same technology but i assumed it would be the same.
So the same car in lets say Arizona would discharge differently than 1 in Alaska.
Interesting.

My Macbook Air stops charging at 80%. I can override that default and charge it to 100%, but the recommendation is not to.

With an electric car it takes money to charge the battery, the question is how much of that charge is wasted due to self discharge. In this short discussion, we have various opinions, the car manufacturer should disclose the number much the same way that gasoline powered cars are to display mileage on each one. Yes, the loss may be small, but it continues 100% of the time. We just don't know and it is doubtful if the figure is ever released.

Interesting.

When running, the batteries are temperature controlled, so ambient temps don't matter. Storage though, good question, how does it handle 100+ heat when not in use, or -32 cold. I know my RC packs have temp limits for storage, and if exceeded one way or the other they must be brought up or down to a temp in the range before being used to prevent damage. The batteries I use in my RC planes is the same technology used in EV, just of a much higher quality with a much more refined charging system. I use all three varieties, LiFe, Lipo and Lion. The Life-Po-4 is the leading edge lithium in use now, more stable, can take a moderate charge/discharge rate, and have a long life, not susceptible to things that kill a LiPo. LiPo are very sensitive to both charge and discharge. Too fast either way can cause them to swell and if too much too fast, they will burst and instantly catch fire. Not really safe enough for passenger vehicle use. Lion batteries are not good for fast discharge use such as driving a motor, and meant for soft discharge use such as low amp constant draw like a radio. They work great for radio control servos and TX/RX, but not for powering a motor.

Storage for my cells is in a metal ammo can with a good seal. If a battery were to suddenly discharge in an abnormal way, there is not enough O2 in the can for it to consume the room, and would quickly snuff out. It would get hot enough to show signs of heat on the paint outside, so I would know of an issue before opening it, and would take it outside to open it.

Take a freshly charged 3000mah 3s pack out and shoot it with a 22 for some real excitement.

Very welcome.

Truth be told I skimmed the lithium architecture and focused on the lead-acid literature. One thing that stuck in my tiny brain is that measuring lead-acid battery health via terminal voltage is very misleading if the battery has been disturbed. I has 6 volt sealed lead-acid batteries at my work. The accompanying literature has a graph comparing terminal voltage to state of charge. The graph is only 20% accurate after 1 day of inactivity but is 95% accurate after 1 week.

The Cadex company developed a system incorporating voltage AND ultrasonic resonance to accurately determine a battery's capacity.
