I would not run it without the skids, they are much cheaper to replace than the wear bar.

As the previous reply said, it looks like the shaft has the same gap but one at the bearing cap and the other at the gearbox. If I were you I would release the shear bolts from the shaft and make sure everything was turning free. Then check the placement of the shear bolt hole related to each...
