The weather here has been crappy but warm so I'm not complaining. It got up to 60 yesterday. No snow yet so after greasing the tractor a few days ago I've been spending my time with the new camera shooting the bird feeder area. Shot these today.

Seems funny now but at the old house I was shooting woodpeckers with something other than a camera.

Happy New Year to all,

Had a sky full of Northern Lights early this morning. Not unusual except it was in all directions, and a sky full of stars as well. Cell phone pics at 4 AM don't do it justice.

Nice way to end 2024. Played with the tractor, got work done..got it stuck and unstuck. The sky looked nice...it didn't feel like December in Vermont for NYE.

Even dandelions were popping out probably wondering why it's getting warm.

nice images of the northern lights moose7060! I heard they were going to be visible in the northern US so I was hoping . . . well not to be. We had a hell of a thunderstorm here last night. I was sure one of the flashes and following thunder was some massive explosion somewhere. The thunder seemed to go on in one continuous roar forever.
No northern lights for me tho I like this 45-55 degree weather we are having!

And a quick stop at a relatively new land mark. I was at boarding school for seven years near here along with my three brothers, and it was really nice to drive around the school grounds and see what's changed and what has remained the same. I also got to see my mother's final resting place for the first time, as well as the house where we were living when she passed away (bottom photo).

A few days ago I got to see the church that my parents were married in, and the house where they lived just before they were married. Quite the family history trip this time around.

That’s awesome.

Does farm machinery have right away there? Do people walk right out into traffic in front off tractor like they would a car there?

My first trip over I was so amazed at drivers responsiveness to pedestrians and quickly learned if step to curb better be crossing the street because traffic stops and gives people the benefit…very different from USA IMO….we play Frogger.

I stepped out of the front door of my brother's house yesterday afternoon to walk down to the farm and around to the village of Burwash as this beast was heading down to the farm to pick up another load of manure.

I stopped by Rudyard Kipling's home Bateman's to pick up some bone china mugs and got a nice photo of the front view of the house. It's owned by the National Trust and gets a lot of visitors each year. The bottom photo shows one of the small oast houses on the backside of the main house. Oast Houses are common in Kent where historically lots of hops were dried, and to a lesser extent Sussex.

I'm not sure about the right of way for farm machinery but you'll see lots of tractors on the road in the English countryside and people seem to be respectful, understanding and courteous.

I grew up in England and learned to drive here, and got my first driver's license here so I might be a little biased. But I would say that the standard of driving in Europe is considerably higher than it is in the US, and I mean every aspect of driving. When I took my test it was an hour long and it included a hill start (manual transmission car), parallel parking, emergency stop, reversing around a corner, all while being asked questions about the highway code. One of the most stressful tests I ever took.

Very nice picture! Believe it is a House Finch. What lens were you using?
Thanks Moose7060 :) I've always been a believer that even a Monkey, given a camera and enough time will come up with some good images.
here is partial exif info:
1736020485971.png

The lens is a Canon RF 100-500mm. Its slow, F4.5-7.1 but its light :) The feeder is on a dead branch that I trimmed and stuck in the ground. Its about 15' from the camera (shooting from my study through the window. The dof is really narrow.
One awesome feature that I never saw before is when editing I can turn on a switch that then draws a box around the focus point(s) as below from the raw edit:

The camera is set to focus on an eye. It's much better than I ever was :)

I have zero knowledge about RAW imaging and processing. I am blind in one eye and can't see out the other so rely on auto focus 😂 . I am blessed with amazing wildlife encounters daily but just can't capture great photos but continue to click away because what I do capture I use as a reminder of the special moment. Please keep posting your pics! Cheers.

You should be able to get some type of APP that will tell you what you have a picture of. Just search for BIRD IDENTIFICATION APP and you’ll get some.

you can also use a photo to search with Google somehow, I have seen it done just never have done it myself
