Rust cancer treatments ???

Anyone got any tips, recommendations, products for extensive rust removal?

The bota has extensive rust on the fenders that is spreading. looking to attack this thing once and be done with it

There was some posting a while back about a product you paint on it kills the rust and bonds with it making it stronger and wont allow it to start again,,, But I dont remember what it was called but I do know it aint cheap!!!

I think that what you're looking for is "rust converter" - try that as a keyword and even the big box stores carry it.

I have used evapo-rust with decent results.

Which is second fiddle to cutting out rust/cancer and weld in new metal. Granted that is a bit overkill though.

You da man!!!!! I'm gonna have to try that I was wondering how to get into some of the hard to reach spots. I got a kiddy pool out back that would be perfect for it plus a bunch of extra metal in the garage

That would solve quite a few issues. Especially if it will remove the paint too!!! Then I can haul them in to work and pressure wash. Weld the rips give it a quick buffing and then prime and paint.

I'll post picks of how it works. If it does really well, I could see a trend starting on this site

I have'ta admit - stole the idea from a former tractor forum - those ol birds had answers for everything !!!

Now if'n I placed my wife in the pool, would it knock the rust of her???

Down and dirty use Por-15, and repaint. Have used it on a couple of restos i'v done and it work great.

That's what I used growing up, and it worked great.

Didn't know if they had a new/improved product 40 years later.

You know, there was one thing that I didn't think about until now. These older tractors were painted with lead based paint one more reason to be able to sell the idea of electrolysis to my wife the hood and dash aren't pad. So those I'll hit with a scuff bad and paint over the lead paint

You know the Redneck hot tub/ truck bed pools? (tarps in a truck bed, filled with water) Have seen similar redneck ways to make baths to electronically de-rust large items such as truck chassis.

What Clay45 said in post #8. It's what I use, and here's where I buy it. A gallon last for quite a few projects.

Just take a wire brush and knock off all the loose paint, and do the same to clean the rust a bit and spray it on. Next day you're ready for paint. It seals and acts as a primer.

In the past we have used good ol Muratic Acid (pool acid), diluted with water.
Works great on metal that has no paint, but you can not use it on structural
items like springs shackles, etc. because you will get imbrittlement.
That would make these types of items weak.

This is from old timers in the old neighborhood,
worked great on the sheet metal and interior items on my 48 Dodge PU.

In the marine industry, we use muriatic full strength to remove rust and corrosion. After dipping in acid, neutralize it by dipping the parts in a baking soda and water solution. Dry, prime and paint. Acid is about $5 a gallon at the hardware store, and baking soda is fairly cheap at the grocery store. Use safety glasses and don't breath the fumes. DO NOT use it on aluminum. You won't have much left to work with, LOL.
