Fordtech86,

Thank you for posting those and I am glad that you and your family enjoyed your visit! I grew up in Gulfport and went out to Ship Island many times.

Mississippi has changed a lot since I left the coast but I still sometimes miss it.

The three coastal counties are very different than the rest of the state and a large percentage of the population migrated from elsewhere. There are numerous government installations along the coast that brought in a lot of people to the coast. My father was born in Minier IL but spent most of his life as a civilian at Keesler Air Force Base as an electronics instructor. He preferred the sand to the snow :)

I moved to central IL in 1989 just after finishing my PhD in the dusty flatlands of Lubbock TX and it feels like home. My daughter intends to come back to the area after finishing her education, it is a great place to raise a family-especially in the small villages and surrounding rural areas.

My daughter was also a big fan of those cannons. These photos were from a trip back to visit Mississippi relatives when she was four.

I remember going to Ship Island when I was a kid. Back when the guns were new! Actually, I don't remember the guns, just picking up shells on the beach.

They do need more maintenance but in fairness to the park service, Katrina happened between when I took my daughter and you took your son.

Poor Ship Island has been through a lot, it was once a single island but Camille Cut happened courtesy of hurricane Camille when I was a kid.

born in 86, not too far from the minier area (varna area where I’m from)
I have been through Varna a few times. A stepbrother used to live not far away on the other side of the river in Henry, he was an engineer at Cat Mossville designing large displacement stationary diesel engines.

No we didn’t.
Well, you have to save something for your next trip to the gulf coast! New Orleans used to be a fun place to go and they had some cool kids attractions like the haunted New Orleans tour but it isn't somewhere I would go these days unless I enjoyed being a target :(

It is a lot of fun although fall is a better time for being out on the open gulf for the day if you can make the time schedule fit.

I miss February in Mississippi because it is the dreariest month in IL and I miss fresh seafood all year around. There was a cool little bar at the commercial harbor where you could sit and watch the big ships come in to the cargo docks and the smaller commercial fishing ships pulling into their protected harbor. It was a great place to relax when you had the time.

I bet that your son would enjoy Honey Island swamp tours which is just across the Pearl River on the Louisiana side before you get to Slidell. My daughter and my nephew Blake had a great time there and you don't have to go anywhere near the city if you don't want to. Plenty of wildlife including alligators and tour is via a relaxing boat ride!

The volunteer fire department held a water competition as part of the village corn festival and following that event they held a separate competition for the kids. The cool mist from the overspray felt great on a very hot and humid afternoon. Shot with Canon 1DX III and EF 70-200 f2.8 glass.

This guy was guarding the humming bird feeder and not letting any others get any food. Fun to watch them fight each other

Wow! Haven't seen that for years. Here's a shot I took of our local fire department doing the same thing away back in 1974...check out the vehicles in the background!

Very cool vintage photo!

I hope the barrel never fell on anyone. During the event last Sunday, the target broke loose from the line but fortunately didn't hit any of the participants.
