Gorgeous shot!
funny you say this…I was born and raised in central IL. Dont have any experience in gulfport, but was way more progressive then I had expected..Mississippi has changed a lot since I left the coast but I still sometimes miss it.
The three coastal counties are very different than the rest of the state and a large percentage of the population migrated from elsewhere. There are numerous government installations along the coast that brought in a lot of people to the coast. My father was born in Minier IL but spent most of his life as a civilian at Keesler Air Force Base as an electronics instructor. He preferred the sand to the snowfunny you say this…I was born and raised in central IL. Dont have any experience in gulfport, but was way more progressive then I had expected..

I moved to central IL in 1989 just after finishing my PhD in the dusty flatlands of Lubbock TX and it feels like home. My daughter intends to come back to the area after finishing her education, it is a great place to raise a family-especially in the small villages and surrounding rural areas.
My daughter was also a big fan of those cannons. These photos were from a trip back to visit Mississippi relatives when she was four.

I remember going to Ship Island when I was a kid. Back when the guns were new! Actually, I don't remember the guns, just picking up shells on the beach. That’s awesome you have pics of the same thing with your kids!!! They really need to up the maintenance budget between your pics and mine

They do need more maintenance but in fairness to the park service, Katrina happened between when I took my daughter and you took your son. That’s awesome you have pics of the same thing with your kids!!! They really need to up the maintenance budget between your pics and mine
I have been through Varna a few times. A stepbrother used to live not far away on the other side of the river in Henry, he was an engineer at Cat Mossville designing large displacement stationary diesel engines.born in 86, not too far from the minier area (varna area where I’m from)
Very nice photos! Did you get a chance to take him deep sea fishing while you were on the coast?

Well, you have to save something for your next trip to the gulf coast! New Orleans used to be a fun place to go and they had some cool kids attractions like the haunted New Orleans tour but it isn't somewhere I would go these days unless I enjoyed being a targetNo we didn’t.
Wow! Haven't seen that for years. Here's a shot I took of our local fire department doing the same thing away back in 1974...check out the vehicles in the background! The volunteer fire department held a water competition as part of the village corn festival and following that event they held a separate competition for the kids. The cool mist from the overspray felt great on a very hot and humid afternoon. Shot with Canon 1DX III and EF 70-200 f2.8 glass.
