Might need to get 2 L305 tractors for 1000, stripping body get ready for paint

20241004_215130.jpg

Steering wheel fully seized to shaft, hit hard with air diesel torch air chisel, nothing works, broke round part trying to unseize it

Picture: let it sit in solvent while I put tractor on blocks thinking of what to do about steering wheel seized

@D2Cat

Yes, she is in amazing shape

20241004_232847.jpg

Hit it hard with torch, air chisel, won't budge, burned melted top and bottom

Let it sit for a day, clean body

20241005_014726.jpg

Pointed metal and compressed air, now, poke diesel brush into crevices, soak body in diesel

This video show you science of how solvent clean metal

Seized steering wheel sat in transmission fluid and acetone over night, clean body get ready for blue paint

20241005_165534.jpg

20241005_165546.jpg

Goal: Try again to unseize steering wheel, finish wire wheeling body, and give one last wash, then use up rest of blue paint

20241005_171810.jpg

Why cleaning is important: notice separation from loosened bolts, ton of crud was here, crud make panels separate from hot and cold cycles

20241005_171858.jpg

Old steel coming back to life

Hitting steering wheel torch, get ready to hit with air chisel

20241005_174425.jpg

Cooking steering shaft, melting plastic, at this point I consider destroying it to get it off

20241005_182341.jpg

I am 2-3 hours into trying everything to unseize steering wheel

Sharpened air chisel destroying steering wheel, it is fully seized

@D2Cat
Paint hardener: yes I agree, if I would have put hardener in that engine paint, it would have dried hard and not have lizard look

@fried1765
Why sand don't get in the paint:

When I hit it with solvent, it charges the metal to be repellent to holding dirt,

watch video from last post

20241005_194425.jpg

I give up, sharpened chisel few times, fully seized

Start cutting steering wheel

20241005_195939.jpg

After hours of air chisel, slice steering wheel with cutting disc

Raise fuel tank to access loose gear box

20241005_204413.jpg

Empty diesel tank, take bolts off, raise it to reach gearbox problem

20241005_211823.jpg

20241005_211838.jpg

Took out fuel tank and steering in one shot

Mistake: did not have to destroy steering wheel, it would've come out and

I would have been able to seal up and fasten the gearbox properly

keep cleaning, get to painting chassis

20241006_003930.jpg

Hit entire body with wire wheel, hit with compressed air, hit with cleaner

Now: hit with air, tape off handles, hit with paint

CAT, once again you mention something I know nothing about :D :D
Can you point online to an example (for enamel paint?) All I see is stuff to solidify old paint for disposal. Or is that it?? Thanks..

Just type in something like "auto paint hardener".

Main bearing case bolt dilemma:

I cannot get myself to pay $65 for a bolt

Then, I still need 2 connecting rods and 2 pistons for this engine

$800 just for 2 connecting rods and 2 pistons new

My narrative: why not just buy 2 whole engines for the same cost?

But I am scared that now I will turn into that guy with tons of parts all over their yard

Or, am I making the smart decision and saving money?

Please critique my dilemma

There is tractor parts all over the yard, and now I want to grab 2 more tractors and have more parts laying around?

Maybe that is the proper rythym - fix one engine at a time by buying entire tractors instead of paying retail for new parts

Summary: I did rebuild the engine with the hole in it with many parts of the engine that now I need to build

Meaning I saved tons of money so far in not buying 2 connecting rods for the engine that is complete

But now that engine need 2 connecting rods, 2 or 3 pistons

That alone minimum is $1000

This is why I keep going back to deciding to get whole tractors instead of new parts

@L35

Right? Having junk laying around is better than paying $1000 for a few pieces of steel

And

With getting 2 L305 tractors, I would have tons of all the bolts, extra gears, crankshafts etc

And I would have 2 d1301 engine blocks that that I can maybe turn into one working engine

Found bolt on Coleman for $15, ordered it since

it would move engine build all the way forward most of engine on tractor, everything but head and oil pan, then

at that point, I can go get another engine or two and pull pistons out of those and put them into the current build

@Vlach7

yes I am considering that, it could be true, that if I get 2 more d1301 engines that I might be able to

finish building current engine and MAYBE be able to put together another good d1301 engine

total I would have 3 running tractors, and I would sell one and would we can experiment with what the market is willing to pay

ok yes I am decided now: save up for more d1301 engines and go get them

only use part suppliers for small purchases

get more tractors and maybe build one to sell

ok plan for this week: put wheels on running tractor, test run make sure she don’t leak, then put loader on tractor and make progress on the hydraulic lines

and if the bolt show up, I can also reassemble the other engine all the way to piston installation

regardless, schedule should be full and I should not have to order anything, or wonder what to do

before running tractor on wheels, make sure fluids are in the axles and the transmission

found genuine used Kubota connecting rods for less than $100

these connecting rods are in tons of other Kubota engine so they are interchangeable

solved: don’t need to get more tractors

I also found Taiwanese pistons for $50, tons of people buy them, they seem well made

more and more I am finding these parts cheaper and cheaper, I found 4 sets of rings for $100, new open box

Keep doing what you are doing Joe. It was an interesting thread to follow and it makes no difference what others may think. Just do what makes you happy.

I don’t think an extra engine or 2 hanging around will change the landscape much. I’d go for it.

Its only time before somebody will need a part you have laying there, and you will be able to recoup some of your costs.

Depending on your location you may be able to use all the parts you need and sell the remains of what you don't want to inventory. Post on the internet the items you want to sell, someone is looking for them!

Y'all can say whatever you want, but for the record, 40,000+ views is damn impressive.

Gotta give Joe props for that. (y) (y)

yes, I know too late to th eparty but...

curious..... Would it have been possible to remove the steering wheel AND the shaft as one piece ?
If so, it could have been held in a good sturdy vice and then a 'pickle fork' used to push the steering wheel off.

Gotta give Joe credit ! He's like the Energizer bunny..keeps on going and going and going and .......
