People saying dont run it without coolant:

Yall realize there is 1.5 gallons of oil it?

I bet i can't overheat it if I tried
I would not bet the farm on that one. The 1.5 gallons of oil do not run in coolant passages surrounding the cylinder liners and head wicking away combustion heat. JMHO. In any case I would not run the engine for more than a minute without coolant, I am too lazy and too cheap to replace a cracked head! LOL

Back in the 70's I rebuilt a 196.6 6 cylinder engine in a 64 rambler. I did rings, honed it, rod and main bearings, valve job the whole thing. It wouldn't start when I first tried and wound up cranking the battery down. I took a break while it charged and foolishly had a couple beers with my lunch. But I figured out that the distributor was probably 180 deg off. Checked when I got back to it and it was. I then tried and it started right up, running really smooth. I let it idle for probably 10 minutes and it started to get rough so I reached over and blipped the throttle once and it caught on the hose clamp for the coolant manifold preheat tube. I thought I better move that clamp before it becomes a problem.
It was then I realized I had oil in it but no coolant. It had broken the rings in the 3rd and 4th cylinders from lack of coolant and me having my coolant didn't help.

Not a happy moment when I was on a limited budget and had to start over.

Not a happy moment when I was on a limited budget and had to start over.

I think the error in your ways was not putting enough personal coolant into your system!

Had you done that properly you might’ve put off doing anything until the next day and realized where you were at with the vehicle engine, and checked for proper lubrication and coolant before you tried to start it!

When I rebuild stuff I might run it for 5 seconds. Why take that chance? I wasn't impressed with the oiling of the parts in the first place. Like you were waiting for it to seize.

Joe's engine had less than minimum recommended compression after reassembly.
Probably does not really matter what he does to it now.

Had to take front support back off, try to install axle and bottom painted pieces

Mistake: I needed to put support onto axle first, then lift them together into the two studs on block

Zero chance I would gotten this far without 3 point lift on bx1500, the value it give is tremendous

Lift axle straight up, then push with body weight into the two studs, zero heavy lifting

Maybe I made mistake: put axle on, but it won't articulate, stuck in position

Forgot to put grease on where it swivel, maybe that small opening in picture is for putting grease on front axle swivel

Hit it with torch/diesel, try to open it and pump grease inside

If I can't get small bolt loosened, put blocks under axle, remove that whole square, put grease inside, then put back on

Could not open grease port, support axle, take out bolts, remove it with air chisel

Sand everything, grease everything, put back together

Hand sand clean everything, put grease, reinstall

Installed axle, lifted tractor, moved support structure underneath axle to clear the way for putting in propeller shaft

Put in shaft with cover, put locking rings on it, cant seem to see where covers bolts to chassis, maybe another bracket

I could work on exhaust and the attachment brackets and their big bolts, I'll look at diagram about the shaft cover bolt

Bx1500 problem: I went back and ran it to trace that rattle, I thought it was engine knock, it's the upper part of engine rattling, I do not think it is internal problem, I hope it is not a big problem but it is needed for the tasks I'm showing

If rpm is raised, rattle goes away, engine sound fine

I won't run it hard just use it to move the show forward temporarily

Figured out propeller bolt, it was on oil pan, put in one big bracket, went through the hardware looking for bolts

It is tight down there, one wrong move and you hit your head off very sharp bracket

Soon I keep putting it back together, I feel it is close to running and moving, there are not many parts left laying around, I plan to put on the rest of the parts, even with the seesaw governor, and move it around under its own power, only parts left to install: radiator, air filter, exhaust

I think I did put new transmission fluid in it, but I would like to check it, I know there is a side port, you take the bolt out, and fill it until it come out of that bolt, close to left shin if sitting on tractor

Plan: finish up putting on rest of painted parts, put the wheels on both axles, start it and move it around

Put on both brackets, took awhile to find the right bolts that fit those holes, connected steering linkage

I sit right there in the dirt, bucket of random hardware, bucket of diesel, going through each bolt that looks promising until everything was fastened


Now: install exhaust manifold, fetch the gaskets, install muffler

I thought you said your BX 1500 had an engine problem and that you couldn't use it… But one of the photos above seems to show the BX 1500 in service…???

I haven't followed Joe's thread closely, but it does seem like he's used the BX quite often to move stuff around recently.

I may have missed the BX engine problem.

I may have missed the BX engine problem.
Looks like Joe edited his post #649 to answer my question…or he just used his precognition powers and I missed it before asking my question…:)

@joesmith123 !

I hope I am wrong but I think you need to install the crankshaft pulley before you put the axle on. I don’t think it will go onto the shaft now.

Chinese exhaust gasket: main one fit, smaller one did not, recycle 44 year old one

This leak got worse when I put propeller cover bolt in, maybe I put wrong bolt too hard and it pushed into the seal

Crank pulley: try first to loosen axle, and finangle the crank pulley into position

Fatigue making me sloppy, skipping steps not thinking correctly, not looking at the diagram

I take day off from it to reflect and understand

Take out axle, install crank pulley, continue reassembly

Moved support structure, loosened all bolts holding axle, remove steering link, bring 3 point lift and finangle pulley into place

Try not to take out axle completely

Took out all axle bolts, slid out axle enough to get pulley in, push axle back in, hopefully splines on shaft line up with axle

Axle, pulley, washer, pulley nut all fastened

Install exhaust, then make progress on radiator long as it don't block access to governor

Installed muffler, couldn't find hanger, made hanger out of ground wire

Tightening governor springs hoping to make it run better before installing: belt, alternator, radiator and plumbing, battery holder

Put on hour meter, alternator, water pump and plumbing, then radiator - battery box

Then i guess fill it with coolant and get it running

I was thinking about dropping one little screw or washer into the combustion chamber could ruin all that work. Then I thought, dropping anything in the cooling jacket or crankcase could be bad, too.
