I agree with Wolfman on all points. I am most suspicious of a tank vent source being plugged.......the vent has to enable two way air flow. In to compensate for fuel consumption, out to relieve captive pressure during thermal fuel expansion.

I'm thinking it's potentially a chafed or broken return line from the injection system. It doesn't sound like there's evidence of fuel spray, resulting from a pressured delivery line. On some diesels there is a fuel rail delivery system but I don't believe your's to be of that design. Wolfman...

Limited slip lubes are fine to use. A friction modifier is introduced into the lube base to promote release of the limited slip clutch plates. The viscosity nor the protection level suffers from the friction modifier.
