The shim is for setting the depth of teeth contact (backlash), generally available in different thicknesses, the seal is achieved by the oring. Other end with gasket probably wouldn't matter (without looking at the actual set up for your machine.)

Once you use it a few times, get it dirty and scratched up, it'll sit out in the rain no worries. YMMV
