We usually find it in the very small ports in the PTO valve itself. Unfortunately Kubota didn't make it easy to get that valve out! It could have been a 20 minute job with a small modification to the frame but the way they are built it means removal of the transaxle. A 10 or so hour job!

An easy way to check if it is a ground cable issue is to connect a booster cable between the negative battery post and a good ground position on the tractor. If it works then you now there is a ground problem.

No, it shouldn't start in gear. BX tractors starting with the 50 series will start in gear because they use a HST pedal switch instead of a gear switch. Your wiring should be like the BX2230 that I posted if you have seat switches
