Your dealer should be able to replace just the tubing in your shaft.

Going this route, I think I would change out the entire axle assy. That way you are not opening up any internals, and probably just as easy.

The issue with chains is, they hang "down" when the mower is used on it's end, ie mower the face of a hedge row or trimming back limbs growing out into a road.

After what theoldhokie said, I checked the parts for my rear wheel. Your stud is used in a lot, of machines including mine. Mine uses two of the studs and six bolts at 3.23 each, pt# 0107351640. Plus some washers. This might be the way to go.

Some 16mm threaded rod may be a idea. You would want grade 8 (10.8 metric) and the correct thread pitch. Cut to length and install with red locktite, or even a jam nut on the back side.
