Just an update in issue #1. I picked up a 30A relay at the autoparts store and wired it up for the starter as recommended. So far so good!! The starter has turned over immediately the last couple of days with it.

Took it all apart and everything looks in good shape. No cracks or gear damage to be seen. Bearing look good and tight. The pieces of the split collar are no where to be found. I will go though it again to make sure before installing the new one.

Thanks. I hopped on the computer this morning and checked out the diagram. I will inspect it all when I take it apart. The split collar is only about $14 online, so I hope that’s all it is.

Everything seems to be working as designed. I do have an intermittent starting issue where I have to jump the starter from time to time. I purchased a relay to fix it, just haven't installed yet. A previous owner appears to have bypassed stuff like the seat safety switch etc....if it ever had one.
