I let my dog out to pee first thing this morning and there were a bunch of elk hanging out in my field. Many were bedded down until they saw my little Heeler wandering around. She's a scary prospect for them at an intimidating 38lb. :giggle:

For those that take eagle pictures I found an age chart that I thought was interesting and 2 pics from last summer.

Do you see Golden Eagles in your area too?
I was going to ask about Golden Eagles also.

Had heard of GE sightings in our area, but figured they were juvenile Bald Eagles.

Bald Eagles are quite common here now, and I've sighted juveniles many times. (Good sign.)

Recent years I learned Golden Eagles might be seen here also on their migration - - "just passing by." ;)

Golden eagles are quite common here in northern Nevada...although I've never been able to get a good photo of one. Bald eagles are increasing in numbers around here also.

No Golden Eagles unfortunately. Lots of Owl species but getting a good picture is difficult. The odd daytime picture of them on a power pole or fence post now and again but mostly nocturnal. Got a video last night of an owl spooking two bucks at the oats but not worth sharing.

While we are down here in Florida I want to learn to shoot birds in flight (BIF). Not so easy :)

and a couple from this am.
I have one that looks exactly like this that's pretty much taken up residence in my lilacs right next to the house. There's bird feeders hanging there and that hawk lives off the small birds that come to the bird feeders. I watch it devour at least a couple birds a day. There's huge windows fronting the lilacs and that hawk totally ignores me as I walk back and forth, or stand there watching him, from 10 feet away.

fat little bugger! Before we came down to Florida for the winter I did exactly the same thing. I took a branch and 'planted' it in the ground so I could hang a feeder in front of a window in my study. Sure did attract a lot of birds in a hurry - but no hawks.

Some really nice shots ctfjr!
ty

decided if I have to spend time in Florida (wifey's thing) then I am going to try to learn to shoot birds in flight. I've been into photography for almost 70 years but never tried shooting that. Maybe an old dog. . .

As I was leaving Wakodahatchee Wetlands this little fella was sitting on the railing of the boardwalk. Common Rock Pigeon. I don't think I ever took a picture of a pigeon before. . .

Some photos from last week testing the new 7mm Backcountry cartridge from Federal. This cartridge, and others that will be introduced by Federal, are intended to improve performance from shorter barreled rifles given the interest in suppressed use. Adding an 8" or longer suppressor to a 24" or 26" barrel makes for a big stick that isn't ideal for many hunters.

This is an 80ksi cartridge hence the steel case. It's akin to a .280 AI with a blown out shoulder and straighter taper compared to the .30-06 Sprg. case, but the shoulder isn't blown out quite as much as the .280 AI.

The barrel shown below started out at 24" but it was cut back in 1" increments to see how the velocity changed. Shooting a 175gr bullet from the 16" barrel produced velocities around 2,900 fps!!

The winter warm up did not last long…taps froze back up🥶. At least I don’t have to carry it up the hill today.
