So I set up another experiment with electrolysis :D

The handles for the fenders :)

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1455755046.206128.jpg

Put the handles in a five gallon pail. Put a chunk of steel in there. Made sure they wouldn't touch. Filled the pail with solution and fired it up.

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1455755169.808489.jpg

Getting much better results :D

Just went out and checked. The rust has turned a bright orange and getting some slime on top :D

So as near as I figure, the bigger the piece to derust, the more metal is needed for a conductor

Thanks for showing this Daren! I was wondering what was going to be the best way to try and salvage some of my sheet metal. I just hope I can find a container big enough for my hood.

I don't know how well it will work for the bigger stuff. I sure didn't have much luck with it. It is working great in the five gallon pail though

Containing the waste when removing lead paint can be difficult. Paint stripper can be the easiest way to remove the paint and contain the lead. No dust and no contaminated water.

The five gallon pail is looking more promising :D

Checked it this morning and there's a bunch of funk on top.

The electrolysis worked on the fender :D

Hit it with the pressure washer and got a pleasant surprise :D

So the other fender is going into the tank tonight :)

So here's a pic of the two fenders. One on the right went through the tank hit with a pressure washer and then wire wheeled with a die grinder.

One on left was just hit with a pressure washer and then wire wheel

Handles need to cook for another day or so, to finish removing the coating. But for right now they are on hold. The second fender is in the tank since they are gonna be more work.

Here's the previous owners handy work. Looks like they tried to address some rust issues before. There attempt was to hit it with a wire wheel for a bit. Said screw it, and rolled on some paint  yes, they rolled the paint on!!!! I found parts of the original l1501 stickers and wire wheel marks when I steamed off the the pink paint :)

Gonna have an inch or two out of the water. Gonna let it cook for 24 hours and then flip it over :)

Daren,

May I suggest reversing your electrodes and tossing in some nickel before some chromium to chrome the parts? Or, if the kids don't need those school funds, perhaps a gold plating?

You are getting good at this!

Thanks for keeping us informed.

My coworker makes and sells artwork out of horse shoes. He figured out how to copper plate, so I've been picking his brain. He said the water needs to be hot for the plating to work right. He dissolves tablets of a house hold cleaner that has a copper sodium in it. Then hooks the negative to a piece of copper pipe, and the positive to his art.

He said he could do it without the chemical, but it was a really thin coating and didn't look all that well. Said after he added the chemical to the mix, his copper coating would come out nice and thick. :D:D

I'm toying with pulling the rest of the nickel plating off the handles, cleaning them up really good. Then give them to him to plate in copper :D

Not sure how fast your bath is working, but you might want to flip your part more often than every 24 hrs to avoid getting a line where the water line is. My theory is from using a similar method to electrolytically sharpen fine wires by dipping them in and out of the air solution interface with the power on. Same for applying a silver chloride coating. You could see it working, bubbling right at the interface, more than deeper in the beaker. Could be an artifact of the shape of our parts, wire, but just in case.

Here's a recap, and some things I figured out along the way :)

The solution: Mix 1 tablespoon of arm & hammer super washing soda per gallon of HOT water. It dissolves easier. I filled a 5 gallon pail in the kitchen sink and used a wisk to mix it.

Find a suitable container to fit it in  If I did it over, home depot sells a storage lock box that was rectangular in shape and would have fit the hood perfectly  I should have just purchased the tote instead of using our roller trash can that we had. I could have laid a couple 2x4 on the bottom of the tank, set what I was cleaning on them. And got better coverage on my scrap metal pieces along the edge.

Clean any flakes of the piece going into the tank. It also seemed to work better getting any grease, and dirt off as well. The fender and hood were pressure washed before going into the tank.

Clean the metal pieces lining the edges of the tank that the positive hooks too. In this case, just buff them down with a grinder. Pay really close attention to where your cables hook too it.

Clean a spot for the ground cable to hook to the piece that is to be derusted :p process won't work without a good positive and negative connection.

Try too keep the metal close to what's being cleaned with out touching. 1 to 4 inches seems to work really good. And the more positive metal in the tank with the part, the more dramatic the reaction in the tank.

If the process seems to stall out. Pull the scrap metal pieces from the tank, and clean them again with a grinder. Hook the positive back up to them and place back into the tank.

A Heavy Duty Wire Wheel is the ticket for cleaning the oxidation off the part that was cleaned. 2 minutes with the wire wheel, compared to a 1/2 hour scrubbing with a stainless steel brillo pad. Here's a pic of the wire wheel I used.

Not sure what's different this time around. But............ It's bubbling the paint off the hood :D

The only thing I can figure, is the mix was originally in cold water. Mixed the water yesterday up hot. So the water is warm.

My coworker had said his plating process didn't work worth a darn using cold water. The same must be true for this process
