Years ago I worked with a guy the liked to drink beer.
His dad was a alcoholic. After a number of years he realized that He drank every day and was following his dad's path.
So he started drinking Oduels .05% alcohol. Then he investigated home brewing alcohol free beer or low alcohol beer.
After experimenting he was able to brew beer with less alcohol then Oduels. When I left that job he was still brewing and drinking the low alcohol stuff.

Taters are in, garlic is up in the raised beds,, still waiting on the sweet potatoes to sprout. Half a dozen mater seeds in and peppers,, only me and seems nobody wants any garden stuff, but go to the farmers market and spend a bunch for the same things I wanted to give them,, oh well

these are something new I’m adding this year and a few squash varieties at my wife’s request. I don’t care for them much, but I’ll put em out there and see what happens

Our garden was a total failure the last three years. I'm going to try a couple raised beds for some beans and tomatoes this year.

We moved to this place in 2017, before that we lived in town and would just do a few containers because we were renting at the time. I was raised in Illinois though and the soil is completely different then here. My first few years were like this, couldn’t get anything to grow. Now I’m slowly getting the ground right and it’s been getting better every year. Last year even with the drought, it was probably the most productive yet.

Do you plan on trying in ground along with raised beds?

Our soil is good. I don't know if it was the seeds but most of everything we planted didn't come up the past two years. Three years ago we had too much rain and cold weather. Thought I'd scale down this year and see if it takes. I will try a conventional garden down the road when I have more time.

I have grown sweet potatoes in the past.
If I remember right they like hot soil.
I would make a hill. Cover it with black plastic and cut a hole to put the seedling in. But we're way colder and plant way later then anywhere else I'm sure.
And now 18" of snow Wednesday Thursday here. Welcome to spring.

You must live up on the hill up there . I’m down around the center point area, the ground doesn’t drain here very well. Would love to see your setup!

Yep it is time to get the datter out if I can find it,, I topped trying to grow corn the deer get it and what the deer dont get the coons do. Beans freeking ground hogs and wabbits, maters and peppers still ground hogs but not so much in the raised beds,, buggers can climb!
S G R, ya might want to send off some dirt samples to your AG agent and get them tested, I did cause things had a hard time growing,, everything came back good but I needed lime, lots and lots and lots of lime, about 5000 pounds per acker ,, no that never happened, but I did lime the snot out of where I had the garden, fall spring and fall when I tilled. That unlocked everything else and things grew like they should,, just a thought.

Since I retired, I grow about 3 or 4 acres of produce every year.
I call it a hobby, my wife calls it a habit. Bought my tractor in the fall of 2017, it rolled over 1000 hours yesterday.
Took delivery of 200 gallons of fuel yesterday. $3.169 per gallon!

Oh my…That’s more than a basic kitchen garden…do you do anything special with cover crops or rotations of plantings?

Also wonder what you is your pre / post season soil routine? Plow/disc or till or no till, etc by season?

I toss new scraps of drywall into the toms and peppers rows. Also had LOST of compost every fall and spring. Plant toms on an angle facing north.

dumb question time what you mean on angle facing north?

this is our tomato patch…he’s going east-west with the tractor, both sides have heavy tree cover, it’s fairly open north-south though. We make the rows the same way he’s going because it’s easier to tie them up that way.

We’ve had a couple days of rain and today I found a window of no rain when I got home from work, between storms, so I started conditioning the straw bales. Just finished dressing them (ag lime and ammonium sulfate). Should start raining shortly and save me from having to water them in. The goal is to have them conditioned in a few weeks and hopefully after they cool down we can plant into them.
