A bit more detail would help. Assuming the tractor is the L4400 listed under your avatar? Exact location of shaft? Does your PTO selector have Rear/Front/Both positions?

Two major possibilities:

1. Mid-PTO for mid-mount mowers
2. Accessory PTO for front mount snow blower or power broom.

I have noticed a PTO shaft near the front axle. Can't find any information about it. Could it be used for turning a hydraulic pump?
Ron - picture is WORTH a thousand words, and would really help!

hmm..posted in 'off topic' section, so I assume NOT a tractor.
My Willys 4WD pickup had a front PTO shaft for the 10t winch as well as a rear shaft for PHD.

I'll bet your talking about the crank splines, yes they can be used to drive a hydraulic pump, many have over the years.
The real issue is parts availability for it are very very hard to find.
But why do you need to?
If you do have an L4400, the onboard pump is up to most tasks.

I'll get some pics of it as soon as I can. It looks like it just runs off of the engine without a clutch but I"m not 100% sure. My son in law has the tractor now so as soon as possible I'll get the pics. posted.

Just wondering what it is and what I might be able to do with it if anything.

on my older L185 (and many others in the same era) the engine crankshaft was extended out the front of the engine and used for hydraulic pumps, electric PTO to drive implements.

I'm guessing that I would have to buy a gearbox of some sort to use it?
