Sad time watching ukraine be invaded. they seem caught off guard.

I wouldn't call it caught off guard, they knew Putin would invade, they weren't caught with their pants down either, they just don't have a military capable of defending themselves. Can't fight tanks and rockets with pillows and blankets.

They just took down a Russian aircraft with 150 paratroopers on board. THAT is how Ukraine beats them. Make the mothers at home in Russia refuse to send their sons and daughters to their deaths. Protesting in Moscow is already happening. All Ukraine has to do is hang on.

Oh i think the military was as prepared as they could be but watching videos of civis scambling to the train stations like the invasion is a surprise. I saw a video of a guy drive right past some armored vhicles only to be caught right in the middle of a firefight. Busses still running on the same streets enemy tank columns were moving in on.

What a waste of time ,money, reputation, and life. If I were Putin I would "bomb" them with vodka and cabbages. In a couple of day I would walk in unarmed to talk over our differences and be done with it. Kill them with kindness so to speak. Putin is a little guy with something to prove. Why else would one wrestle bears ? Its been said the Russian psyche is a dark place. My guess is the matter is resolved relatively quickly. Democracy has been spreading thru out the world and may prove difficult to constrain over the long run thanks in part to the internet.

I believe that Russia will end up occupying Ukraine with a puppet government and troops for a long period. And Russia will pay a high price because Ukrainians will take potshots and bomb the occupiers. Over time this will take a toll on Russian society as the costs and casualties add up. Perhaps the Russian citizens will demand a new government and an end to the occupation. This won’t be quick, but it sure seems like Ukrainians are determined to defend and liberate their country.

Ukraine has now downed 2 transports - 300 Russian paratroopers gone in about 3 mins of freefall. Can you imagine if that was the US?

And Russia will pay a high price because Ukrainians will take potshots and bomb the occupiers. Over time this will take a toll on Russian society as the costs and casualties add up. Perhaps the Russian citizens will demand a new government and an end to the occupation. This won’t be quick, but it sure seems like Ukrainians are determined to defend and liberate their country.

Putin doesn't allow Russian citizens to "demand" anything. Saw on the news today that a demonstration against the war in Moscow ended up with the demonstrators beat up and 1700 of them thrown in jail. They'll probably get sent to Siberia and never be heard from again, just like in "the good old days" of the Soviet Union.

At my age I remember the talk that a "Hitler" could never happen again in these modern times, that we (modern society) would never let it happen. But now that it is happening, most people just shrug and, as long as it doesn't really affect them too bad, let it slide. Does Putin really care about "sanctions"? The Russian people may suffer and even starve but you can bet Comrade Putin will be living comfortably.

I think Putin should be put on trail, aka Nuremburg, and declared a war criminal. Even if it is in absentia. Thousands of people are going to die solely because of his empire building. And you can bet China is watching to see how the world will react; Taiwan may be the next to suffer.

What is interesting to me is how similar this is to the start of WWII. Hitler used the reuniting of the motherland when he took over Austria/Czechoslovakia. The world at the time filed protest and sanctions, then agreed to the Munich Pact, which led to the invasion of Poland.

Putin, takes Crimea to bring the native Russian people back the motherland. Now, he is going after all of Ukraine to restore the original motherland. The Budapest Memoranda has done nothing for Ukraine even though it was signed by Russia and western nations to support Ukraine. Putin declaring that the rebels are the official government giving him the greenlight to invade.

The question is Ukraine the end or will Putin continue to try to expand?

On the positive side at least the media has something to talk about other than covid.

Russia is on a peace keeping mission. Just like Crimea. And the US in Afghanistan and Iraq. There will be a bunch of arm waving over the next 2 years and then everyone will forget because Trump will be back in office.

First came Hitler, then he was eliminated and the horrors of what he had done were known world wide. Then came Stalin, and only just recently have we heard of the horrors that were done, by then, too late. Now Putin wants to bring back the good old days of the USSR.

The one and only way it could end without that happening is unforgivable, Nuclear war. Hitler found out the hard way that you can't win in Russia, not with Siberia. We could be looking at a second Cold War soon.
