I checked an recheck the manual before changing the oil in my MX5800 for the first oil change at 50 hours. I checked the oil prior to the change and it was at the top level. After draining and adding 9.5 quarts I poured the old oil back in the containers and realized I had a little less than 2 gallons. The oil was an inch and a half above the top line. I tried 2 hours to get a hose into the oil pan but nothing worked. Finally I removed the plug and drained out 1 3/4 quarts. The oil was 1/4 above full. I stated and it was 1/8 inch above full after filling the filter. I removed and emptied the filter. I started the tractor again and the oil is 1/16 of an inch below the mark. I fear it will be high when the oil drains down. If it above the high mark do I need to take out more oil?

I found two more users on the web with the same problem. I use the hate greasing equipment more the oil changes but after todays experience with incorrect manual, a grease job would be easier.

The capacity in your manual is the DRY FILL capacity. There will always be a bit in the engine that won't drain no matter what you do.

When I change mine in my M's I always add 3 quarts less, start the engine and the fill to the full line on the dipstick cars likewise. My cars call for 5 quarts. I put in a gallon and top off accordingly.

Thanks for the reply but 2 quarts seems like a lot of oil not to drain out with a warm engine. The day before I changed the oil on my L39 backhoe. It called for 6 quarts. I added 6 quarts, ran the engine and let it set over night and the oil was only 3/4 the up from the low mark. I will certainly follow your suggestion for future oil changes.

the book is wrong
Seems to be a problem more common than I would have thought - M4500 WSM has bad quantities - front diff case 70% overfull, axle cases 30% underfull, bevel gear cases 25% underfull, I always go by the level indicator.

It is probably the conversion factor from liters to quarts was incorrect or used incorrectly when the book was translated.

To the original poster: please post the value in the book for the metric value if it is included.

I know nothing about your particular tractor but just a thought...does it have two drain plugs and were both of them pulled to drain the pan?

parts diagram shows it has two plugs.
