I admit being a Liberal thinker when it comes to race…but blaming “Aunt Jemima” as racist…

…Purely escaped me! I don’t buy the “replacement product” as the result.

I just wouldn't use rotella. Seems like whenever an engine is torn down that's on that oil it's full of sludge. It's really an overhyped, overpriced, under performing oil.
Hogwash.

Also, to learn about oil, including rotella you should go to bob is the oil guy instead.

Adding applause to bob-is-the-oil-guy…. I also would like to point out a misconception referenced earlier in this thread…. Oil which turns dark Early after an oil-change… merely demonstrates it has an aggressive and effective detergent capability. Continued use of that will help clean your engine of the junk your regular oil may be leaving-behind. IMO

I use what the manufacturer recommends on expensive equipment.
I run Schaeffer oil in all but one of my five diesels. I've only encountered one manufacturer who recommends a specific brand of oil and that's Yamaha. They call out Yamalube specifically in the owner's manual for their outboards so that's what I buy. Those 6,000 rpm engines are an entirely different animal and I'm happy to follow Yamaha's recommendations on basically everything related to the engine.

My buddy has a Moto Guzzi 1000CC motorcycle. Believe it or not his owner's manual recommends Rotella T-6 in the 5W-40 grade IIRC. And no it's not a diesel :D

Funny you mention Yamalube - I have three yamaha waverunners, and thought about using Amsoil in all of them........... then bought 3 gallons of

Trust me:
You are far better off with equipment maker recommended lubricants.
I had a long ago experience with Amzoil (snake oil) transmission fluid, that I will never forget.
IMHO, Amzoil= equals advertising hype, quite similar to that of Interstate batteries!

"But generally stay away from buying Shell proucts"
Like AeroShell?,..... Known to be one of the very best in the aviation market!
Sorry, but I'm not a pilot. Wished I was when I was young. Most of my pilot friends are dead due to prang.

Not to go off tangent, but my dream in college was shot down. My family is all Marines except for a brother who was a Coastie - "I want to save lives, not take lives". As he explained it. None-the-less, His boot camp was pretty tough to hear him tell it. And after all he ended up on C130's going after drug boats!

Anyway, I wanted to get into Naval Flight training through Annapolis and be a Marine Aviator. Loved the Harrier at the time. Found out that my color vision was bad. Real bad. End of story.

So, Shell maybe the shiznit in aviation. I'll take your word for it. And I won't embarrass myself or the pilot next time I fly by asking which oil is in the planes engines! :p

Hell, it's an oil thread.. Lets talk about airplanes! ;)

I use T6 Rotella in my BX2370 and my RT900, I don't have any sludge so your analysis must be flawed.
I also service ad or disassemble lots of poorly maintained diesel engines and have not found sludge in ones using Rotella.

Shell became a well-respected name in aviation during WW2 when they produced tons of 91 octane aviation-grade fuels (which, for conformity, actually ended up in virtually everything that used gasoline).

What REALLY promoted their brand tho’ was their development/production of TCP (tri-cresyl-phosphate) which saved high-compression, supercharged and turbo-compound engines from detonation by allowing super-high octane leaded fuels….but which created additional problems due to lead fouling….which the TCP solved.

Phosphates were also introduced by Shell as a wear-preventative in lubricating oils…. and the Rest is History…. making Shell one of the early Big Names in aviation circles.

Other mfr’rs caught-up and are equally good now that Shell’s proprietary, exclusivity has expired.

Phillips and Mobil also enjoy good reps… Exxon tried an aviation oil for piston engines but that didn’t pan-out for them, but their 2380 synthetic turbine oils are well-respected….and, of course, now Exxon (descendant of Standard Oil of Ohio…ESSO… and Mobil (descendant of Standard Oil of New York, ..SOCONY….are re-united as one company, having been split up back during the anti-trust/anti-monopoly days (Sherman Anti-Trust).

Ain’t it funny how things seem to repeat themselves.

What ever happened to cleaning diesel engines with diesel fuel? 30 or so years ago, mechanics would drain ~ 2 quarts of old oil, add 2 quarts of diesel and run motor, from a cold start run for 5 minutes, then drain oil.

That's some good bbq sauce!
The only bad thing about it, I don't know the true viscosity of that sauce!

Yeah, once it hits the hot chicken - the viscosity goes south quick!

What happened is modern oil technology has gotten so good that sludge and varnish buildup has been largely eliminated. Every API certified oil has to pass multiple sludge and varnish resistance tests and that includes the many different Rotella products.

In todays world more than ever a sludged/varnished engine reflects on the owner's oil service intervals not the brand of oil.

Yup, spot on sir!

About every 3rd oil change(5k intervals) on my gas/diesel trucks I add sea foam motor treatment in the oil, usually in the last 300 miles prior to the oil change. Engine oils have change a lot in the past 30 years. What I used to do 30 years ago, was a Lot More work. Adding a little bit of petroleum based cleaner (sea foam) prior to maintenance, sure has made things a lot easier and cheaper.
