How would you hook a chain or rope to the base of a very young cedar so you can pop it out of the ground with a tractor?

Wrap a chain around the trunk at ground level about three times, hook the chain to itself. Pull from drawbar.

I used a 5/16" log chain wrapped around it 2 or 3 wraps, hooked the end back on itself, hooked the other end on my loader SSQA frame or the forks, and plucked it out. Kind of taxing if you have more than a few, but it's good exercise.

Edit: Since I have more than a few, I sprung for a Landhonor tree puller. It's not the best available but, after modifying it, it'll pull little trees up to 6" or so.

I use a homemade grabber. It’s much faster than wrapping and tying chain, and it pinches the tree or shrub and the pipe digs in so the chain doesn’t slip. Just use a chain with a hook and slip it thru a short pipe. Wrap it around the tree and hook to on the pipe. Then pull….

Pulling works, but so does a rotary cutter. That’s how I deal with small juniper saplings.

I used to use a chain wrapped around the base of the tree and hook up to the 3 point. Now I am going to use the way that @Marky showed.

Thanks all!

I kept thinking the chain might just pull the tree over and slip off but it sounds like it will work. I've never seen a ring to slip over the chain like that before. Great idea!

If you are good with a welder something like this might work better

Dang, If I was on an ATV going that fast with that cutter, I would hit a gopher hole, cutter would dig in under a big root or rock, and it would not be pretty. 😳
But I like the cutter….

Here's a simple method to get greater leverage to pull up and out of the ground. Any large round item will work fine, even a piece of firewood. You may need a longer chain.

If you aren't in a hurry, cut the cedar about 2 ft off the ground and next year you can just push the trunk over by hand.
