What was the price of a gallon of gasoline in the year that you were born? This website will tell you, and it also has some great gas station pictures. At the end of the gas price page, there are more interesting items. Things from the year you were born that don't exist anymore

$2.71 (inflation adjusted). I thought it interesting they adjusted the absolute price to an inflation adjusted price for a true comparison. It’s a pretty good example of the impact of inflation, which I suppose is a topic in the forefront of some of my thoughts as I consider retirement at 56 which has the potential to be a rather long time not receiving a bi-weekly paycheck. Sure, I could continue my current lifestyle off $70k/yr post tax $, but 25 years from now $70k may be peanuts. Stuff to think about…

Less than a buck, thats for sure! I can still remember going 4 miles to the next county to fill up the cars with my dad. It was $0.99 there but $1.15 in our county. Every Sunday we would fill up his truck and my mom's car for the week.

$.16 per gallon when I was born in 1940.
I can remember the late 40's, with my mom and dad filling up anytime we went near Providence, where there were always "gas wars".
Usually in the upper teens.

1964,..... I was in USN, stationed in Newfoundland.
Bought a new VW Beetle there, for $1200 USD.
Gas was $.12 CAD/US gal....., for US military personnel.

One of my favorite stories to tell the young ones. "Use to coast my minibike with empty 1/4 gallon tank to the pumps, fill it up, give the cashier a dime and get 2 cents back", 32 cents per gallon in the late 60s.

The year I was born gasoline cost 28 cents a gallon. That's funny, because 17 years later, when I started to buy gas, it was 28 cents a gallon at the cheap discount station. The other stations were only a few pennies more.

When I was in high school and self service fueling was a new thing I would frequently fill up and drive off without paying. I did not think much about gas prices then (or criminal charges). Two six packs of Miller "High Life" beer however were $6. To keep the 8 track tape player operating at the proper speed the car had to be driven fast. The male human brain is not fully functioning until the age of 25 and this is a very dangerous developmental period. I am glad to be alive. I am sure the last thing many of my generation ever heard was "You need cooling baby I'm not fooling I'm gonna send you back to schooling......" Still love me some Zep!

Thats fun…thanks for sharing. If I understand it, it’s not the whole story though in terms of our buying power today versus the adjusted price…the price is adjusted to inflation, that doesn’t account for the devaluing of the dollar that seems to be riding a runaway freight train with no end in sight…it also does not account for the taxes that have been creeping.

I wonder if there are records of electricity pricing from the 1800s(thats when they started year depends on whether you believe carriage or car and rechargeable or not) so the EVrs (I wonder if the infrastructure will be here then or just the price increases for the commodity🤔) can talk about it in their wonder years.

It does remind me how old I am and how it’s unfortunate that the dollar is not an investment. But it gives me hope I am not as old as EVs are and that I have much more range.

I think gas was about 29¢ when I started driving and had been pretty flat several years before that. A few years after college the gas stations had a problem when gas went over a dollar, since the dispensers only had two digits.
