L2501 will not start. was working and then just quit. Question: how do you jump(bypass) the PTO safety switches to isolate them from the system during troubleshooting?

I'm not sure why you think it's the PTO safety switch. I've had far more trouble with the seat safety switch than anything else. It turned out the rod which enables it to raise had become detached at one end.

Depends on your tractor. Some safety switches just open the circuit. In that case, you just add jumper around them. Easy with a short section of wire and an alligator clip on each end.

Some close the circuit. In that case, just disconnect them.

Use a meter to see which way yours work.

The PTO lever on the transmission is controlled by the lever upon the fender. It is very often the cable that connects the two becomes stuck. The top lever will move to the off position but with the bound cable the bottom lever does not move. Spray the cable with something like PB Blaster and see if it will move the lower lever and allow the the tractor to start.

Also, take a look at this thread if your tractor is a HST. The steps I took to fix are in the last post.

Thanks for all the inputs. Dealer service says its a bad safety switch. Mine is gear driven not an HST. I read the PTO switches with my meter and the are closed. Per the schematic, the switches close to allow voltage to the system when the PTO in disengaged. The seat switch is not in the starting sequence. Battery is good and charged. Starter has been bench tested. I think I am down to the ignition switch. Because the stop solenoid sometimes clicks when the ignition switch is turned and sometimes not. Thoughts?

I have a gear drive L, when this happens on mine it’s the range switch. Usually gets grass/debris in it.

edit to be more specific…it gets debris in the range shift lever and doesn’t let it return all the way to activate the switch.

I checked that too. I put a jumper wire on it just to double check. No joy.

Get your meter out. Disconnect the switch (label the wires and terminals). Test the switch 10 or 12 times. If it fails even once, replace it.

Have you check the Range Gear Shift Lever safety switch?

From the WSM:" When the PTO lever is set to "Disengaged" position and the range gear shift lever is set to "Neutral" position, the engine can be started "
