While discussing birds…on an oak tree in our backyard we have an owl-box… and have a current mouse-murderer resident, who lives rent-free…

Saw one diving towards the wife's Tulips (red and pink) by the house. I will set out feeders this weekend as it is still 50 degrees (F) and rainy. General area of the borders of New York, Connecticut, and Mass.
For those not familiar with this part of NY , we have more cows, chickens and trees than people.

Surely not at your current rate of consumption (1.25 Gal /day). But it wasnt really a serious suggestion anyway. ;)

Found the vid tho.
Showed this to my Dear Wife…. (the REAL birder in the family)….and she did what most wives do when she saw it…..she immediately remarked, “WELL.. I see he wore his BEST SHIRT for a Video!”

ROFLOL

(She also immediately identified the colorful-bird at the end of the video saying, “THAT;s a BALTIMORE ORIOLE!”

None here in the coal country yet, though inspite of the flowering trees, Im sure the bloody wind and rain might be keeping them south for a bit

I took this video a couple of summers ago looking out of one of the kitchen windows, and it amused me to watch these incredible creatures doing what they do as Pavarotti sang Nessun dorma in the background.

Your hummers are a lot less territorial than mine. There's always a big fight going on around my feeders, with one of the hummers driving away all the others. I put up 3 different feeders and the hummers buzz from one feeder to the others, chasing each other.

I'm no hummingbird expert but some varieties are more aggressive than others. The Black-Chinned and Ruby-Throated seem to be the most aggressive up here. I have three feeders up but don't get that many birds to be honest. Just a consistent stream of a few all day long.

Every year I get one dominant male that will hang out at the feeder & chase away every other hummer that shows up, it's an endless battle to get to the feeder and an absolute joy to watch. Occasionally I'll see a male doing a mating 'dance' for a female at the feeder. Hopefully I'll get some pics that I can post here soon! :)

Haven't seen any yet, but it got cold again. Doesn't mean they aren't around. Mostly, I see them playing in the sprinkler come June. When it gets dry they will dance about in the sprinklers to cool off/ drink/ clean(?) or whatever they do.

Put the feeders up Saturday and got company today. Sorry about the crappy picture. I have not owned a camera since they required film and a working knowledge of shutter speeds. The feeder is back from the house and near the tree line so they have cover from the local birds of prey.

I saw my first one today. It was one of the very small ones. It was on my porch in the shade, so I couldn't see the color.

I saw something weird tonight. It's stormy over here with thunder and lightning, and two hummingbirds appeared to be asleep on the feeder, with a third feeding but keeping an eye on me. The feeder sits under an eve so it's out of the rain and maybe the little guys like that.

The closest one was awake, but the other two were fast asleep.☺ By the way, a couple of days ago I actually witnessed a hummingbird placing that feather in the center of the "flower" on the right.

The bottom photo isn't that clear I'm afraid. I need to get my old Nikon D80 dusted off.

Much better photos with the ancient Nikon D80, and these were taken through a closed kitchen window.
