Could this be true??

So i splurged and bought a new Ford F150. I have had great reliability with them over last few decades. Has exceeded my expectations. Comes with the FordPass app. that remotes starts, locks/unlocks doors, tells you where the truck is if stolen, amount of fuel, etc.... over the internet from where ever you are in the world.

So registering the vin in the app. it needs not only my e-mail address but also the e-mail system PASSWORD.

If I give them the password they could fwd copies of all e-mails other places, control all the admin functions of my e-mails, read all e-mails including details from say my doctor, accountant, lawyer, banks, etc.... couldn't they?

Is this not an over reach them asking for admin control including ability to read / forward / save all e-mails?

I would get $200 in "ford points" for doing this but my gut tells me know way / no how is giving up access to my messages re: my legal, medical, financial situation.

Am I over reacting?

The e-mail should be used for your ford sign-on. Use a new password for THIS site.
Do not give out your actual e-mail password.

do you mean enter a fake password for my e-mail system?

I tried this and after the FordPass app spent a few minutes thinking it tells me the password in not valid and wouldn't complete the registration process.

The salesperson who was setting up the app. on our phones said it needed to be the password that matches my e-mail providers admin password.

Myself I am not very computer literate so app's is something I do not use and have to rely on others to install and set up for me.

Get another email address from Gmail, Yahoo or other, then use it only for your Ford. I use these throw-away email addresses for all kinds of things, for example store cards. When the spam gets out of control, throw it way and get another.

Yeah, do NOT give anyone your real email password. Not Ford, not me, maybe your wife but probably not. That’s really creepy if they want admin abilities on your email. Maybe they never use it, but…🤷‍♂️

I have, I think, 7 emails currently. I have the one for accountants, lawyers, banks… business stuff. I have one for personal stuff. The rest are because somebody required my email to do something I wanted to do but I was pretty sure they’d irritate the crap out of me so I set up a special email just for them. Even then I’ve never given anyone the password to my email, even one of the BS ones.

Kind of hope there was a misunderstanding somewhere. If not, that’s very creepy.

You need your email to set up the account but the password will be just for the Fordpass app

I'm still trying to understand the need for Ford to know YOUR email password. There's no technical reason for it. Maybe someone can shed light as to WHY ??

What I do know is that 'app' does send a LOT of information to Ford 24/7, same as OnStar , those insurance save 25% modules/ apps, etc. Silly stuff like GPS location info, speed, how hard you brake, engine temperature, seat belt status, etc....
Take a couple hours and READ the fine print !!!Odds are you're giving them YOUR data, for free and they can sell it to anyone they choose. That is how the car insurance apps work.

Mine never asked for my email account password. I have a Ford owners site password, and a FordPass password.

Im not sure it would let me set it up for you then, but if you want to pm me I can hopefully help you get it set up.
thanks.... it was the salesperson who tried making the install for me and told me the password thing. I had no clue what my e-mail password was anyways so nothing completed.

Me thinks i will find a local 12 year old to do it for me (haha) no urgency as truck is still a little ways from being delivered as I am getting some accessories added.

At least your truck is built, I would be concerned if it was ordered, but not yet built with the planned strike going on.
