We have a lot of red cedar growing everywhere around here, but the post of choice is hedge (or osage orange, or bodark) all the same wood, different names. You can't weld on it, but it will outlast steel post.
Much drier climate here, so it's not uncommon for a cedar post to last 50 years. I have a few cedar posts that were pulled out of an existing fence line, that was installed in the 1930's. My neighbors, his family had owned over 5,000 acres in these parts back in the day.

Black locust is one of the preferred here.

While I was in fire and pulp wood years ago took a VERY brief venture into selling posts.

Had a decent stand of locust on grandparents farm.

Quickly learned cutting, splitting and sharpening posts is very different than 4’ pulp or split firewood.

Sold quickly and easily, but it was a very short venture…. I think going rate was about $3 +/- each at the time.

Was used to cutting # cords per day. Seemed like a lot of work to make # of posts - as I wasn't very proficient. Pile was much smaller, but of higher sale value per unit volume.

Got an appreciation for what it takes to make posts. We always cut/made our own on the farm. I was too young to be part of the process when we had cows. I only could pound them in.

Animals definitely keep things interesting.
Well, it's really my fault, I've got really busy selling a home, buying a home, graduations, getting my boys off to college etc.. In my 'mind' calendar, I had plan on taking the bull in back in January to get tested. When the neighbors bull visited last week, I knew I messed up. Oh well, live and learn, a costly mistake too, lol.

Finally got ahold of a driver, gonna have about 90 tons of baserock hauled in, 4 truck loads, so I can fix the road to our newly acquired farm house. I'm excited, the price is good too. I will need the Oranges ready by Friday morning!

Its probably an hours ride by horse and buggy from the Amish community South of town, but its not uncommon to see them at Tractor Supply.

My bull sold in auction today. Cubed the neighbors cows and JP today, trying to get that herd to know me a bit more. I'll probably cube them everyday so they can feel more comfortable around me and it will be safer when I need to seperate JP from the herd.
