So I've got a grasshopper 321d mower with a kubota d722e motor. It has been running fine but has 1623 hours on it. It has always been serviced on time with kubota filters. So last week it decided not to start. It turns over but seems to be a little slower than normal. I can use the boost on the battery charger and it spins over faster but still will not start. Regardless of how fast it turns though, it pours black smoke from the exhaust when I try to start it. I have changed fuel filters and have plenty of fuel from the injection pump. Could one of my injectors be stuck open and dumping too much fuel? Any thoughts?

Sidenote: Probably unrelated but I did replace the starter this summer and used a cheap one. After it gets hot, the starter wouldn't start it. I had to wait until it cooled off and it would start right up.

Try to check it you have 12V at the glow pluggs.

Yea it's getting too much fuel, or bad fuel, a bad injector could do it, but unlikely.
Any chance the fuel might have gotten contaminated?
And as Pkek said check the glow plugs for power in glow/pre heat and while cranking.

*EDIT* So I talked to the guy that works for me and he has corrected me. It wasn't that the mower wouldn't start. He told me it cut off on him and now won't start, only blowing the black smoke. Sorry for the misinformation.

Black smoke usually comes from a running engine that's loaded and getting a little too much fuel for the amount of air that's going in.

Normally if a non-running engine is over-fueled, you get some blueish white smoke out of the tailpipe and it smells like, well, fuel.

Diagnosing stuff like this--especially when the Op isn't there directly, is not easy.

Remember diesel engines only need fuel, air, and compression. So if it ain't running, it ain't got one of them. Even overfueled engines will normally start and when they do, the clatter and smoke abnormally as long as nothing else is wrong.

I***8217;m with you on this, black smoke means it***8217;s burning and not enough air, white smoke would be not enough heat whether that be lack of glow plug or lack of compression. Being it died while running could it be as simple as the air filter plugged up or collapsed?

I've seen some "rebuilt" injectors on ebay. Anybody ever used one source for rebuilt injectors? I just want to make sure that if i buy them, they've actually been rebuilt and not just cleaned up to look new.
