Just curious what is the price of off-road diesel in your area. I paid 5.89/gallon, 10 cents less than highway diesel. I always thought off-road was significantly cheaper but it seems I was wrong. I’m in Idaho

The games being played with pricing have always been there but lately they are rather extreme. For example the next state to mine has taxes that are much less and I bought my fuel there, lately the pump price is exactly the same. It is now pricing by what the market will bear, fairness is totally out the window.

$5.59 locally about 2 weeks ago.

Doubt that it has come down because the on road diesel has not.

"Red dye" is typically about 40 cents per gallon less here but only if you buy it at the right place.

There are retail stations in the area that carry both highway and ag diesel but the price is nearly the same, just more station profit for the red dye. The difference in price is large enough with smart buying that several years ago it was pretty common to see pickup truck tanks getting "dipped" by the revenue folks at some farm auctions to check for cheating. That led to some heated exchanges both from those who didn't have locking fuel caps getting tanks checked without permission and those who did arguing over the agents right to check. These "revenuers" and meth heads stealing anhydrous (and creating a large spill in the process) were frequent morning coffee shop conversations.

I didn't use that much diesel with my Deere 955 and often bought road tax diesel at Casey's out of convenience but when I put in my standby generator with a 60 gallon tank it was worth it to buy red dye for it and now I use the generator tank with a pump to fill the Deere and I will do the same for the Kubota F2690 when it is delivered.

$4.99 in North Georgia as of 7/16. On road was $5.29 or $5.39 at the same station.

It "should" be state and Federal tax free, so whatever your state taxes are, plus the Federal Tax should be the difference between Green and Red diesel prices. Here in IL that works out to at least .60 less while across the border more like .30 less.

I know of only one station that has a red pump, and they are 60 miles away, so unless I am driving the F350 there, then it is not worth the difference than regular pump prices using Open Roads.

Anyone know of a site that will show red diesel stations? Been searching for local places to get it, but all I come up with are delivered fuel and they won't deliver under 100 gallons and I only hold 50. I have a 50 gal transfer tank on a pallet I load into the truck or on my flatbed and fill it at the station.

It was $5.19 a gallon near here. That's about 50 cents less than on-road in Montana.

I can get green diesel for $4.62 with OpenRoads, last I checked the Red 60 miles away was $4.65.

What is green diesel? Some type of Biodiesel?
Regular on road pump diesel. It has a green dye. There are 3 dyes, Red Green and Blue, though don't remember what the blue was for. Diesel is usually clear to slightly yellow.

Apparently the government doesnt like paying taxes....

  • Blue-Dyed diesel – Blue-dyed diesel is identical to red-dyed diesel, except that it is used in U.S. Government vehicles only.

I'm sure other states do the same, but if you live in Virginia you can keep your receipts and submit them for a road tax refund. I have done it for off road vehicles- dirt bikes, lawn equipment, boat, gas for race practice. You can also do so for diesel. The red juice is hard to come by here unless you want it delivered. 50 gallon minimum. The delivery fee makes it not worth it for me.
Just a thought for those that don't have off-road readily available.

they also don’t like their mandated emission equipment on their modern diesels…so I hear anyways…at least they are switching their 600,000 plus vehicles to full electric, any day now…

I've switched to the local FS supplier. Their off road diesel isn't any cheaper ($5,69/gal last fill up) but the tractor seems to be getting better performance and using a little less fuel.

off road and on road fuel are the exact same thing, just dyed different to distinguish between road taxes paid on the fuel

supposedly red fuel isn't taxed

here, diesel is taxed at $0.285 state, 0.244 federal + $0.03 sales tax, grand total $0.55/gal

Red diesel is 4.85/gal locally. Same station's clear diesel is $4.94/gal.

It don't add up....or, at least, something don't add up.

If they cost the same to make, then red outta be $0.55/gal less expensive ($4.39) which it obviously isn't. Maybe the dye is $0.46/gal or something...who knows...

and what bugs me is how "they" came up with taxing diesel more than gas. Supposedly because the big trucks (all run diesel) do the most damage to the roads, they are supposed to pay more. Well...what about us that own/drive little diesel powered pickup trucks? They are much rarer and they are not heavy enough to cause the same damage, and generally we don't drive them much other'n from the farm to town or just around the farm mostly, so why penalize the little guy?

I keep asking people about this and there is no clear answer from anyone, not our leaders, nobody!

That's true, but FS off road has no bio diesel and they mix cetane and a number of additives to you would normally pay xtra for. It is not what you're buying at a gas station. Not trying to be a FS fanboy, but it seems to help.
