BX 23S Third-Function Question

New here. And, have a new BX23S. I had the Dealer install a Third-Function unit on the tractor. I'm thinking he did a very poor job of it. But, before I interface with them I thought it would be a good idea to ask those with experience first.

First of all he installed a W.R. Long unit. Going to their webpage the LA340 loader is not specified as being compatible. But, it does function. The problem is that he routed the unprotected hydraulic hoses between the wheel and fender on the rear. There's only about a 1/2" of clearance between tire and hose. When I stick my index finger between the tire and hose the finger hits on both sides of the gap. It's just a failure waiting to happen. If I get mud built up on the tire or a stick in there and it's going to get impinged and leak. Then, there's a loop on the front that gets the unprotected hose within an inch of the front wheel when it's turned hard. I have pics attached.

Just looking for confirmation that this is No Good. Other than calling and complaining, which I intend to do, I'm open for suggestions.

Yep! That's the worst installation I've ever seen on anything tractor related. What a disgrace! :mad:

I have never been around that model tractor but I would never accept that installation of that valve. The first muddy day on this farm and that valve would be finished. Its crazy someone thought that was a good way to mount a valve.

I agree. Thanks. I did find that there is a specific kit for this tractor. And, that's what's on the Bill of Sale. But, I can't verify that the correct unit was installed. And, it's certainly not installed properly. Unfortunately I can't find the installation instructions. I'll contact WR Long on Monday to see if I can find what it supposed to look like. Their installation video is of a different unit and tractor.

sigh...... Has to be in the top 3 for the WORST installation of the CENTURY !!
Tire gap is 'miserable' and the bent hose looks a lot tighter than the minimum 6x the hose radius I was taught.

Bet you can't mount the MMM either !!

Thanks. You're probably right about the Mid Mower Mount. I don't have any intention of using it. But, still, that's not the point. Thanks for pointing that out.

That looks terrible.
Is the control valve mounted to the outside right of the tractor by the loader arm?
You should have gone with the Land Pride kit.

I wonder if the tech was irritated you didn't get the LP kit. Deliberately installed it half assed.
I would take that back and get it correctly installed.

Do you have a backhoe on that tractor?

A backhoe and supporting mods (subframe, wider ROPS, ect) are what make it a 23S, instead of a 18/23/2680
It's the only way you can currently get a factory backhoe on a BX.

Just making sure. I am thinking that the kit may not be meant for a tractor with a hoe and they cobbled it into the backhoe lines anyway.

Lots of tractors out there. This (BX80) is the only one I know, so I know it fairly well at this point. :)

On these the backhoe splices into the hydraulic system right after the pump.
There's a quick disconnect basically at the pump output, on the rear of the transmission. You disconnect this and insert the backhoe lines into this connection.

Usually the third function is ran off the loader valve, which is under that right fender, inside and in front of the rear wheel.
So the backhoe shouldn't effect the third function setup.

Most (all?) aftermarket kits mount the third function valve on the right of the tractor, by the outside of the right loader mount (or right behind, but on the 80 series the loader hydraulic quick disconnect is in the way). And then run the lines along the right loader arm to the right side of the loader. Because the loader valve is on the same side, it's easiest to run the lines basically along the outside of the tractor from the loader valve to the third function valve. That's also the shortest and cheapest way to run the lines. And the most exposed.

The Land Pride kit mounts the valve on the inside left loader mount.
The lines have to run diagonally across the tractor, so they attach to the loader valve power beyond and run to the inside, over? the frame rail
Then the lines run along the left loader arm, across the front of the loader, to the right side of the loader.
There's probably double the length of line in the Land Pride kit. I know the extra line doesn't account for much of the large price difference, but OEM can have it's advantages.

Good thought. Thanks. The paperwork says the kit is the correct one for the BX23s and LA340 Loader. I can not find any numbers on the visible part of the kit. Just "WR Long" on the block. So, that's a follow up question for me to the Dealer.

I think the problem is more the dealership people doing the install are clueless on the proper routing. That and no professionsl should ever deliver that mess and think its correct.

Thanks for the info. The Land Pride kit is actually a good bit less expensive for this tractor than the WR Land kit that was installed.

I definitely agree with that.

Really? MSRP for the WR Long kit is $925. I paid $1399? for the Land Pride kit. I did the installation myself.

That's for an older BX, not the 80 series. Or even the 70 series?
See where the joystick is mounted? It's on the right fender for the 80 and I think 70 series.
