......... it will cough a little trying to start.
I completely agree, BUT (and thats a big butt) if you miss it, your screwed....at least with my machine.

On a lighter note, this just popped into my head......

Simple solution, ‘and I can not lie’…buy a new top handle 192 or what ever the number is now, and then also a 460. Those two saws will do what majority of ‘home owner pro’ types would need to do. Ask the dealer to throw in some chaps and for 1500ish you should be set.

if you are ‘stihl’ hungry after that, add a logging winch.

I've got the 271. I put the choke switch all the way down, or maybe its up.....As soon as that bastard makes a noise that resembles it wanting to start, I move the switch up one. Soon as it fires, i knock the choke off.

If I pull on that thing a half a pull after its made its starting noise on the far choke setting, it will flood. I set her down and head for the house.
This is kind of what I was saying earlier.

There’s two settings on these. I think I usually push it up too far when it does fire.

I haven’t figured it out but hasn’t been a huge problem for me. I can generally make a saw run if it’s able to do so.

Sounds like @skeets isn’t even getting any fire to begin with.

Not sure what primer bulbs some of you guys speak of. Certainly none on any saw I've ever had.

I do have them on trimmers, etc. Different critter.

N.Y,
I fixed 20 years of hard starting stihl products with new Echo saws, wackers, and blower. 😆

That's why I don't own any stihl's either. I've read countless reviews on hard starts.

I have huskies, always starts on 3rd pull. No muss, no fuss.

Good day.

I hope you are doing well.

primer bulb (not sure correct terminology) I referenced is in picture…(sort of middle right side of pic Below handle / orange choke switch.)

My brush cutter and pole saw also have a bulb to prime.

I bought Stihl's large "Kombi Tool" powerhead four years ago and it almost always starts on the first pull and never needs more than two pulls so I think they got it right on that model. A couple of pushes on the primer then put it in the start position and it is ready to fire.

I chose the KM-131R model which has the larger 2.2 CID engine and it handles the attachments i bought with ease (pole saw, string and metal blade trimmer heads, blower). I like having one powerhead which handles multiple tasks and so far no complaints about it. Previously I had a dedicated Stihl trimmer which went about 22 years before I retired it so Stihl has served me well.

My chainsaw is a Husqvarna which has always been reliable also.

And today the saga ends! I took this POS to another stealer,, The gay at the service desk say , and I am paraphrasing here throw it away, parts and labor will be more and a new saw, o and by the way we have it for 359+tax. So 400 bucks thrown away on something that was suppose to be a good saw. So I stopped at the big K they handle Echo saws, which I hear are a good saw. Stood at the display for the better part of a half hour. People sitting at their desks, sitting on their thumbs, playing with their phones. I guess these places are making tons of money and dont need any of mine,, OK rant done for now, I think

If you're not cutting big stuff battery saws are wonderful. I only use gas saws over 16 inches now.

I use my saw for fire wood, and yes a battery is ok for small stuff no doubt. My luck is I would have a dead battery and one not charged :)

I cut most of my firewood with mine these days. A battery recharge takes about the same time as a nap.

I agree. I keep the bigger milwaukee around just for that reason. Also have 2 of the 6 inch pruning saws we use on the berries.

I'm usually behind of what's new or what's been improved. A customer yesterday was telling me he owns six husqvana saws. The most recent one he bought is fuel injected. I had no idea that saws had advanced to fuel injection. I'd think it would be easier starting and constant power.

Stihl 500i is the only fuel injection saw out right now. Husqvarna is working on one but hasn’t been released yet.

My demita is guess. He showed me a photo of a orange saw. He bought it in Concord NH at a dealer/ farm store.
I'd of bet money it was a husqvana.
But maybe it wasn't. Said he'd got it at their one day sale for $650.
But on the internet they are $800.

My '90s era Jonserud a couple years ago started developing below freezing temp starting issues. Normally 2-3 pulls fires Jon up. One cold day started playing around with the idle speed setting. Seemed to help. At least it started. But come spring needed to reset idle to warm conditions. Thought. Old Jon might be slowing aging away to becoming a grumpy old saw.

OP, did you try adjusting the low speed idle setting?

I was at local Stihl dealership couple days ago for trimmer line.

Always take a quick look at the new saws.

Only price I noticed was a MS462 at $1,400+. They’ve gone up a lot in recent years. Makes my older 046 Magnum look very nice!

They had both a 400 and 500 but I didn’t look at prices. There was a time I could put them to work, but that’s a bygone time anymore…..;)

Dang, I aint heard of that one. Not up on all the current saws though either.

Mine was right at $500 last year from our local ace in Crystal Springs.

The boss got a ms661 there a couple years ago that was over $1k. It was as long as our lunch table to. He ended up downsizing the bar pretty quick. A bit much to handle.
