    Scam- Buyer Beware

When I was looking for a tractor I had this email exchange over a CL ad... Me: What's the story on this tractor? Him: I'm in the service and about to be deployed, tractor is in storage at the base, need to sell it. Me: What base is it at? Him: xyz base (in Pacific NE) Me: What a coincidence, I...

    Tree cutting books

Jeff Jepson has a couple great books on tree work that might appeal to the folks who frequent this site. "To Fell a Tree" is all about safely getting trees on the ground and cutting them up. "Knots at Work" is about the knots and rigging used in tree work. Both are well written and illustrated...

What stupid thing have you done today

The average chainsaw injury requires 110 stitches. I tell people that's the number you need to think about every time before you start your saw. So yeah, you did get off easy... and I'm happy for you! :) -- Carl

    3 point PTO Generators

We're still on generator from hurricane Irma. After the hurricane I was able to use my tractor and chainsaw to help three of our neighbors clear their driveways so they could get out. Nice not to have to choose between electricity and helping neighbors (or running water for that matter). --...

    Bonehead move...

That will definitely keep gas cap protectors out of the tank! :) All kidding aside, this thread just cost me some money for one of those cool borescope thingies! -- Carl

Irma blew my rain cap off

How about turning the engine over by hand? Seems like that would tell you if you have a hydro lock situation without bending anything. -- Carl

    L3800: can I move a 1200 pound generator?

OP back with an update... I put my grapple on because it is the most solid anchor point I've got. Put the rotary cutter on the back for ballast. I rigged up a sling and anchored it to the bottom of the back edge of the grapple. No, turns out I cannot lift a 1200 pound generator... but I can...

    L3800: can I move a 1200 pound generator?

That's a good suggestion, and many of them do come mounted on heavy duty trailers. I thought about it, but that would make it easier for some lowlife to make off with it. With it on the ground there's a good chance I'll notice his forklift before he can make a clean getaway! :) -- Carl

    L3800: can I move a 1200 pound generator?

It's military surplus. You can find them on eBay or research auctions. They are a little pricey, but our tax dollars paid a little over $10k for them new. Where else are you going to get a generator that is designed to handle an EMP from a nuclear weapon? :) -- Carl

    L3800: can I move a 1200 pound generator?

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. There are definitely more options on the table now than when I started, I knew you wouldn't let me down! :) Here's a link to more info on my new beast: https://greenmountaingenerators.com/manuals-and-support/mep-803a-manuals/ Scroll down a little, the...

    L3800: can I move a 1200 pound generator?

So I got this cool military surplus diesel generator called a MEP-803a. It weighs about 1200 pounds. It's set up for moving with forks, would I be able to move it if I had a set of quick attach forks? It has skids on the bottom, so I can drag it and nudge it into place if need be, but if I could...

    Stump. At a loss

Divide and conquer. Try cutting it in half from the top down, get it split, then work each half separately. It's got size going for it right now, take that advantage away from it. Don't fight fair! :) -- Carl

    Understanding Millennials

D2Cat: thanks for posting this, watched it with the family and it resulted in some good conversation. Yooper: I'm on the same page. The individual always has a choice on how they respond to a situation. Some of those millennials will develop better work/people skills than their peers and they...

    Equipment Abuse?

I watched a crew replace sections of sidewalk recently. They had a skid steer with pallet forks and a guy with a jackhammer. The jackhammer guy would break loose a 5'x5' section, then the skid steer would come in and work under it with the pallet forks, then turn and stack it on the back of a...

New member needs purchase advise, odd requirement

How about experimenting in steps? I heard they have tilt tables for tractors to find the tipping point, with a chain to keep it from going over. Use the same approach: experiment with a safety in place. Attach boat to tractor and position at top of ramp. Park truck in front of tractor and...

    Canopy Size Suggestions

My canopy is a 4'x6' piece of 3/4" exterior plywood. The back edge of it is 14.5" behind the back of the ROPS. Do I wish it was wider? Not really, but I think that's going to vary depending on your application. I have to navigate in woods, so I wanted enough to protect my noggin from falling...
