Be interesting to see how you get along with that plow. Just bought a 2-16 JD 415 in like new condition last week. Have a IH 3-14 plow chief but at times it's a little bit much for my 2wd M4500. I think you're going to be glad you didn't get a 3 bottom plow. Oh, that plow will be a cat1 3-point

Yeah, but I was living in ignorant bliss before since I didn't know it was cracked to begin with. That old tractor doesn't owe me anything. Only had $1,500 in it 10 years ago and at that time it only had 900 hours on it.

Reassembly about 6 hours start to finish, but that includes lunch and about 2 hours dinking around with the cab mounts that didn't want to line up. Good as new.

Yeah, and it was only a hour from home.

Just hook it to a pole somewhere with a chain and put it under load on level ground. If it is a gear issue it will show up on level ground under a load just the same as on your hill. If it spins the wheels without grinding or popping it's probably related to the brakes as noted.

Already picked up a used axle. $190. Ordered a new outer bearing and seal and inner o-ring. And of course 3 pails of hydraulic/transmission fluid. All together about $425. Nothing else appears damaged. Probably could have reused bearing, but....

Been a while since I've been here but thought this would be worth a chuckle for folks. Mowing hay last week with the M4500 and then this happened. Of course it didn't happen from mowing. Obviously started a long time ago and finally got to the critical diameter.

As in - tighter than .017 file to get to .017, between .017 and .034- leave alone, .035 - service limit - replace.

Well... My M4500 calls for SAE 80 gear oil. The hydraulics and tranny share the same oil (11 gallons of it). That'd be fine I suppose if you never used anybody else's equipment (I'll rent a no-till drill or borrow another implement occasionally). But... if you contaminate someone else's modern...

Yeah, you're gonna be pretty disappointed in the WSM if you're wanting to do much injector pump work. Not much detail, no torque specs for the lines & etc. at least not in the copy I have. I'd wager someone cracked (loosened) the lines some time thinking they need to do that to bleed the pump...

So my M4500 came with a muffler that was more or less round. But when it came time to replace it I just bought a straight in/out glass-pack with the correct size outlet, cut the nipple off one end and welded a 24 inch extension on in its place (didn't want to use a clamp on the top too). Looks...

Our office used to be housed in a building w/ the local JD Dealer. The green parts go in the dumpster! (good thing to "drive by" on the way home at night with permission of course!)

Bet it's Powder Coat! The film gets broken where the fitting threads in and corrosion starts. But the film strength is high enough that the corrosion continues rapidly without breaking through and it'll rust at an incredible rate because it stays contained under the PC film. So-so metal quality...

For what it's worth, My original M4500 Operator Manual says to "preheat for 40 seconds" in cold weather and 60 seconds "below -15C" (5F). Id say I rarely heat it that long.

My M4500 rattles, pops & huffs some white smoke at cold start-up. But far less than the old IH did when I was a kid. Doesn't take long to smooth out but haven't ever timed it 'cause it always seemed pretty normal for an 80's something tractor. Mine takes about a 30 second glow around freezing...
