also "not a mechanic", but I was under the impression "white smoke" was indicative of a blown head gasket and antifreeze/water getting into the cylinders. -Smell the fuel in the tank. -Look in the rad for oil slime -Look in the oil pan (dipstick or pop the oil drain plug) and look for water...

You certainly DON'T need an impact gun, air compressor etc. A 18-24" bar & socket and piece of "cheater" pipe is all you need. (Mechanical advantage) You are turning it "lefty loosey" (CCW=counter clock wise) correct?
