Learning to sharpen HSS lathe bits......A lesson in futility.....

Excellent choice! The tool on the top will quickly be your favorite. Will both face and turn.

Learning to sharpen HSS lathe bits......A lesson in futility.....

So everybody understands what we are dealing with, the images are the speeds, hp and feeds that our lathes have. Yup, a whopping 1/4 hp on the original motor! If you want to put on a larger motor you will run the risk of wiping out the aluminum (Zamack) gears that drive everything except the...

Learning to sharpen HSS lathe bits......A lesson in futility.....

After reading this a bell started ringing in my head. Some years ago I purchased a set of HSS lathe bits and inserts. So I opened up the the drawer and there they were. Forgot that I even had them!

Learning to sharpen HSS lathe bits......A lesson in futility.....

As promised, this is an image of what I use. These go in a 3/8" tool holder of which I bought a set that includes RH, LH, straight etc. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about by now. Dan is absolutely correct about the clamp style being the best but too late, this is what landed on my...

Oh man! That is a very good question to which I have forgotten through the years. I will post a link to a conversation on Practical Machinist that may or may not enlighten us to help answer this...

Learning to sharpen HSS lathe bits......A lesson in futility.....

It was so easy when I first got into this game. It was generally triangular and square inserts. Negative rake tooling was just starting to come into its own. I can’t keep up with all the different shapes and geometry and where they each shine. I’ll take a few pictures of what I use on my lathe...

Learning to sharpen HSS lathe bits......A lesson in futility.....

Dan is right on the mark with indexable tooling. I’ll add this from my experience owning the same lathe you have. The last number in the indexable chip represents the radius of the insert tip that does the cutting. Keep this number at 1. Example: 321 versus 322 or 323. Our lathes don’t have the...

Hoist pad project. The adventures of RWS continue!!!!!!!

I’m suffering from hoist envy! Starting to get cnc plasma envy! Here is a sample of what you can use to measure your cut distance with accuracy. I prefer the magnetic style. You can find these in any machining supply catalogs or on eBay, Amazon etc

It's a disease that has no cure..........WTF did he do now???

Pleasantly surprised with the lack of smoke/dust with the water table. Plasma particulate is very fine and gets on everything including your lungs. I see you are starting to learn about part tip up in your video. You will figure that out with experience. Enjoy your CNC toy!

    Fencing and rocks....

What’s that saying? Good fences make for good neighbors or something like that. 😉 Shame it has to be that way. But I will say this. When you set out to do a project, you don’t mess around and cut corners! That is one hell of a project! Happy anniversary!

    Backhoe steel

My guess is it is grade 50 steel. Just a step up from A36. In fact if you look on the charts the upper end of A36 crosses into grade 50 territory. ER70S for wire feed or 7018 for stick. No preheat necessary unless you live in the arctic and you are welding outside in subzero. Good luck!

Do anything when you were young that amazes you now?

Pulled a Chevy small block out of my brothers truck by hand. Stood on the wheel wells and out it came. Competed in powerlifting back then. Said to myself that someday I’ll brag about this and the two people that witnessed it, my dad and uncle, wouldn’t be around to back it up. Here I am. Had the...

No...Go ahead and let the chips pile up.....

These are the holes in the drive gear along with the indexing pin. This is the setup I use to mark the holes. Its easiest if you can drill a centering hole in the piece but this is not always possible. I run the center punch into the hole leaving the set screws in the qc holder loose so the...
