Here is the setup ready to machine. Put a jack stand underneath to support it so it would take some stress off the table. Chucked up my boring head and made several light passes to clean up the face. Happy with the results!

Here is what my setup looks like on the mill. I started by drilling a center hole for the 4" hole saw. Next I marked the plate and then drilled two holes that will allow the shavings from the hole saw to clear out because this plate is 1" thick. I then drilled the holes to match the bolt circle...

Working on the front bolster. This is the front of the tractor and it supports the front wheels and the steering gear. There is wear on the top bore below where the hardened gear for the worm drive steering system lives. Probably no big deal but I wanted to challenge myself to see if I could...

    Looking for some "machine advice"

Every machine in my shop including the big lathe were moved with 1-1/2 pipes underneath to act as rollers. Pry bar or come along winch to get things in motion. Three pipes underneath and a fourth one to “time” rolling onto as you roll off one as you go. You will be surprised how easy it is. You...

Using a tractor to assemble a tractor. In keeping with the theme of not doing heavy lifting by hand, I used the forks on my L3901 to set up the wheels and add the weights before installing them on the axles.

    Looking for some "machine advice"

Buying used machine tools will always involve some wear. How much is the question and the only way to find out is to physically operate the machine. Keep in mind the buyers premium when at an auction. After you win a bid they will tack on as much as 18% of the price. Ouch!

    Wet sandblasted

Once again thanks for the reply. I was using black beauty for the media. That’s some pretty aggressive stuff. Might have to give your sand a try. Not sure what the pressure is on my power washer but I will look that up in the manual tomorrow.

    Looking for some "machine advice"

I started with the rotary phase converter 30 years ago because that was the best way to go back then. Had issues with the manufactured leg (aka wild leg) messing with the motor logic starters on some of my machines. Had to convert them back to the old style heater type. At no load, the wild leg...

    Looking for some "machine advice"

One thing I want to emphasize is don't be intimidated by 3 phase! This is my 27" Lehmann lathe that I rebuilt and power it with a variable frequency drive (VFD). These are available on ebay and amazon and can be had for less than $200. The key is you have to double the hp rating if using single...

    Wet sandblasted

Thank you for your reply! I have the same setup as you. It works but I find it to be on the slow side compared to air blasting. How long did it take you to blast it?

I've been dreading painting the rear wheels and weights because they are awkward and heavy. A few short decades ago it would have been no problem laying these out flat and flipping them over by brute force. But that was then and this is now. So I came up with this setup and with the aid of the...

    Rebuilding Deck Gearbox RCK54-23ZG

If there was a gasket originally I would reassemble back with one. It would be critical for shaft end play.

Wow have welding gas prices gone up.

I use straight Co2 for both my hard wire and flux core. That’s all I have used since I started wire welding back in the eighties. Much cheaper than the mixed gases. At least it used to be. Its been a couple of years since I bought a tank of it

Who else buys tools/things for the explicit reason of "Because it's too cheap to pass up"?

One more sign that we are related somehow!

Got the engine married up to the torque tube with no drama. My clutch alignment tool worked with flying colors. My next goal is to make it a 'roller' so I started sand blasting the front bolster and after a bit the executive decision was made to farm out the blasting. I just don't have the...

    Sometimes I'm Not Very Smart

I like drawers and cabinets to store things in because it looks so much neater than shelves where it looks sloppy and collects dust. But if you don’t open them from time to time you forget what you have. I am the absolute king of doing what you just did!

Well, I wanted to get the paint on the tractor before cottonwood season but it came early this year and stayed well beyond its welcome. So I basically left it alone waiting for the right conditions to paint and clear coat it outside. Friday I applied the color and today was the clear coat. Came...
