Sorry for getting back to you so late but I just finished a part out of 4140 that I tossed in the vibratory bowl and I wanted to show you the results. To answer your question, yes this is the same thing you use for brass cartridges. I used this media from McMaster in the bowl with just enough water to wet the media along with a couple of drops of dishwashing soap to make it a bit slippery so the part moves through the media better. https://www.mcmaster.com/4918A192/

This was only 2 hours in the bowl but you can see the milling marks have been softened.
