Guessing here. It looks like Joe is not using a punch that fits the ID of the bearing and the grease is squishing out around the punch. OR, the punch has a diameter that reduces before it reaches "home" going through the bearing.

Just for giggles, it wouldn't take a lot of time to cobble up something like this to try. Find a bolt that has a head, that when rounded, fits through the ID of the bearing. Grind the points off. Make a saw kerf from the head end into the shank of the bolt. Insert the head end into the bearing so the head is on the back side. Drive a small wedge into the kerf to spread the head so it grabs the back side of the bearing . Take a short piece of pipe, or a couple pieces of steel that will sit outboard of the bearing's OD. Bridge the pipe/steel with another sturdy piece of steel with a hole for the threaded end of the bolt to protrude through. Put a greased-up washer and bolt on it and tighten.

Only problem with this: I don't see how I can get teeth behind the bearing and grip it enough to pull it

Got the 2nd pilot bearing removed

Pilot bearing on crankshaft with 500 hours was much harder to remove

That is like what I had shown you that I used. As long as the ends grip the backside of the bearing it should do the job. Take a video of you setting it up and pulling the bearing out.

Trying to uplift it from crankshaft, can't, fully seized

Now: hit it with torch, fill it with diesel, let it set in, give another shot with sharp chisel and sledgehammer

Mistake: chiseled into it for no reason, that was the whole bearing without the back cover

Before putting it away, you might want to consider hitting crank journals with that sharp chisel used to hit bearing recess in crank.
Joe's escapade just might cause folks to replace the moniker "school of hard knocks" with "school of hard hits".

Plained all flat surfaces with 80 grit flap, then 2800 rpm wire wheel

Removed all gasket material

Used files to get hard to reach areas


Hit cylinders with t shaped wire wheel on drill, spin both direction

Hit with compressed air then part cleaner

Propped up opposite side of block to paint, hit with compressed air then alcohol

Spray matching paint

Since there is nothing left to do on block with hole in it, shift focus back on other block that need milling job

Plan: take to machine shop in person, offer to pay the shop rate plus $150 tip if they can get it done within a month

It would be nice to put them back together at the same time, using the same tools, same diagrams, same hardware

The engine is worthless disassembled, but worth big cash on the machine running

If block and head are properly machined ,then no gasket is needed.
problem is finding a machine shop that CAN do it right.

That block had such little wear, i cant find anywhere on it to clean.

It only had 600 hours, thats only 6 oil changes

The reason why it popped a hole in the block: it must've sat for a decade or 2 without starting once

Then once it was started again, parts were seized and damage occurred

Not only are you seeing the pictures, but you are reading my narration, I am honored

problem is finding a machine shop that CAN do it right.
There are very capable machine shops that can mill the liners, its just that I am a nobody and cannot get their attention

Now, economy slowing down, people are more available, I can see it working out where:

If I offer the extra $150 tip, some guy might stay late and mill the liners faster

Also, that last machine shop had a hundred engine blocks all over the ground, and one guy working 15 hours a week trying to keep up, zero chance he was going to get to it

I will only leave the block there if I see evidence of motion and more people working

Soon: I load block that needs milling, I go show up in person, there are 3 machine shops I will give a try

That extra cash tip is the answer

My offer: pay the shop rate, and offer the cash tip to the exact person that does it

Also I notice with these kinds of places, you can't really call them, it's better just to show up in person

That way, I hand the machinist everything in one shot, no need for him to look up specs, he'll have: clean block, spec sheet, and a broken piston as reference AND the $150 cash tip if completed within a month

Sounds normal for Canada to me.

Canada had a national holiday in every month except February, and decided that they just had to have one more!
Created it. out of the blue, for February, and.....
Called it: "Family Day"
