Nice! What was your total?
1.1in

I let the cows in the corral, almost half acre in total. It's been closed off since early March, that will give them a couple days of green grass to forage until the native grass absorbs moisture and grow from todays rain.

Getting a very light rain right now, the radar looks way more intense vs actual, but regardless, we're getting something. thank you Lord.

Measured .2 of an inch from last night.

Wondering if it's enough to perk up the grass in these 110* heat index afternoons.

In 110 deg. the dirt absorbs all the heat quickly and doesn't cool off much at night. Two tenths in those conditions is like "a spit in the river" sad to day.

Partner I feel sorry for you guys. We've got quite a bit of rain the last few weeks. My BIL had an ad on Market place that I just happened to see. He was selling 10 net wrapped bales of brome for $30 each. It had been posted 3 hrs when I called, thinking it would be sold already, but they weren't. I called him on his cell number and told him I'd take them. I know the guy who wraps his hay and they are HEAVY bales with his new JD. I'd bet they weigh 1300# easy.

Grass may go dormant with heat and drought and it often has the common sense to wait awhile.

That .2 of inch didn't do anything but keep the dust down for most the day.

Didn't get a drop last night or early this morning. I need to shred all the weeds. I would love to buy hay at those prices, I'm lucky if I can find bales under $100. I plan on buying hay soon cause a lot bailing is happening down here, and it's best to buy now vs. waiting till Fall. Were buying the neighbors house/farm, that will add another 18.5 acres to our 50. That place is a bit overgrazed right now, and nothing has been done to the 10ac and 7ac pastures in 5+ years.

Started cows on hay yesterday.
Started the new cow heard on hay mid June last year 2023. And in 2022 all the cows, calves were sold in May cause there was like 2in of rain in 6 months. 2021 was almost normal rainfall, healthy cows and calves.

We had a 20% chance of rain today and not much for the week, and it change to 60% this morning. Now it's 100%, just got 5 min light shower.

Up here, we don't feed hay to pasture cows until November, God willing.

It's amazing how close you are to places that have WAY TOO much rain.

Of course, Texas is a very large state. Never been there.

Years ago, a neighbor coworker was praying for rain at his dairy farm during haying season (about June 1, like today).

Dairy farmer 25 miles up the road had 22 inches in the span of a month...had a hell of a time planting corn and doing first cutting for hay.

It's just where those storm systems dump their precipitation...

Wishing you the best.

Appreciate that. Yeah it's feast or famine, what is normal nowadays anyways?? LOL

Texas has 10 natural regions or ecoregions. I have experienced 100+ degree weather and been through a snow storm all on the same day in Texas.

I was talking with a big ranch owner in my area yesterday. He said the King Ranch(deep S. Tx.) plans to reduce their cattle herd by 30%. I currently don't know how many head they have now, but 15 years ago they easily ran over 60K head of cattle.

16 days till summer officially starts, but this heat wave is a bit out of norm.
Heat index values expected to exceed 112* all week. I have a couple pouches of electrolytes that I need to mix up in water tubs for the pregnant cows. I need to fill all the wildlife waters up as well.
