Axle or case wear would be my two go too's.
Especially with the clunking I'm hearing.

I'm no expert and it's not entirely clear, but it seems to me the movement is in this area, not the axle. I think that is controlled by the bushings NIW showed in post 6. Did you go into that area?

A part has to be worn to let it move like that.
You'll have to pull it apart and look and measure for wear.

I would have any of the parts you might need for your front drive. I would have the outer axle assembly rebuilt ready to ship as well.
