An ACTIVE volcano is any volcano that has had eruption in the past 10,000 years.
Interesting read on Maui wetlands and watersheds.
It is an interesting read about their watershed areas. There are plenty of streams / waterfalls on the island that I have seen. Never really thought of them as wetlands though. The east and west watershed areas look to be in places tourists (or much of anyone for that matter) don't go .
Well I don't know about that but a lot of weird things have happened like...I was sent a post stating the fire was started by a direct energy weapon from space. I sent back this:

I know it shouldn't surprise me, but it amazes me how quickly people will believe anything as long as they read it on the internet.
'Technically' if it has erupted in the 10,000 years it is considered 'Active', after that period...then 'dormant' (if expected to erupt again).
To be fair, the island is a bit bigger than just the part that burned. Approximately 25 miles wide and 50 miles long. I would expect anything upwind of the fire to have escaped damage.
If my research is correct, the Maui island is like 460,000+ acres and around 2,500 acres burnt in the fire. So, it is a small percentage of the island that burnt, so many places would of survived.
Maybe the Hawaiians weren't "connected"? You don't need to go that far. Why are some US citizens not treated like other US citizens?
This is the part that makes my skin crawl. The fire themselves are a disaster, and its not likely there is any one cause of what happened but several factors which at this point we will likely only be able to speculate about.
