It most certainly did make this "boy into a man".The 'Military' has made many a 'boy' into a 'man', but I don't think the 'draft' (how they got there) had much to do with it.
However....I won't argue your second point (Gender Identity). THAT certainly seems pretty screwed up these days (among other things). It was pretty cut and dried when I was growing up.
I was a 3rd year college student (civil engineering) and wanted to quit.
If I had quit, I most certainly would have been drafted.
Met a Navy recruiter at the student union one day,..... and my life was shaped forever.
Spent 5+ years as a Naval Aviator.
A decision made with the threat of the draft,....... and without a doubt, the best decision I ever made!
