Recovered B8200 - Found abandoned

Finally got time to get after this thing today. I don’t have a stand hold up my phone to shoot a video so I just took a bunch of pictures.

Here is the as-is before I start. Well the new tank cap is on.

Basically, I disassembled the steering wheel and remove the dash. I must say the electrical has been tampered with quite a bit. if I get this thing to run, I’m gonna go through the entire system and fix it correctly.

Stick a 2x4 in the dash to hold it. Shade tree mechanic

Got the new switch connected. Holding old one in hand. ALL of the connectors and wires need work! I set a battery in the battery tray and connected the terminals, gave the key a twist backward and got the glow plug to start smoking. So I turn the key forward to see if the starter would bump and sure enough it bumped about a quarter revolution and then stopped. Gave another bump a little further and then one more bump and it made a full turn so I stopped right there.

On to the tank and lines…..

Oh my what an adventure this turned out to be! I ended up having to pull the fuel level sensor and put some gravel in the tank and give it a good shake around for awhile to bust up a ton of varnish. I got about 95% of it out. Also found a few surprises in the tank.

If you don’t have one of these you should!

Asmit was getting dark I got the tank back into position and stopped there for now.

Good start. Tomorrow I’ll finish the fuel lines, fuel filter, air intake filter and inspection, and then !

Well, I replaced all the fuel lines, primed, everything as best I can, and I’m not getting any diesel coming out of the injectors with the fuel rail cracked open.

I’m wondering if it’s the lower fuel pump. To me when I take the fuel line off the pump and crank the engine over. Shouldn’t the pot be putting out a pretty good squirt? It doesn’t seem like it’s putting out much fuel. Just very small dribbles with each revolution.

I went to the local dealership and bought a new fuel filter and O-ring. Also, when I explain to them that the bleeder valve leaks when unscrewed and drips, they said it may be sucking in air and should not be doing that so I got a new bleeder valve.

I will give that a try tomorrow. A new pump was like $170!

Now is the time to start a spreadsheet to keep track of the expenses involved with getting this tractor working. You can also have one for your time invested, but don't total it up too often, or you will lose all incentive to get it running. I like projects like this because of the challenge, but at some point in life, the chase isn't worth the reward, as when you get really old. I'm so old, I remember father time when he was an infant.

Yes I agree on the cost/benefit consideration. I am cautiously moving along. The only reason I’m doing this is for the challenge and potential reward. You just never know if st the end of the rainbow is gold or pyrite.

I went ahead and ordered this $23 electric diesel pump. Should do the trick IF the pump is the problem.

I am envious of your find. I have two B8200"s, One is HST the other is manual. The former has a compression relief as noted on the diagram and manual doesn't. You can't beat that little tractor I have worked mine (manual) with Bradco 8LD back hoe in commercial playground installations and retired it to an Island summer home I have been building. The HST was a recent addition mostly for parts(front axle replacement) but I ended up keeping the donor and using my original as a parts tractor. Both are still running strong. They are easy to get going, I can do it, so good luck and have fun.

It set at the factory for engine speed.
DO NOT ADJUST IT!
Hence the reason it has a tamper resistance cap!

Forget adding stuff like a fuel pump, just bottle feed the injection pump from over the engine, bleed the injection lines at the injectors not at the injection pump.
And see if it one, it moves diesel out to the injectors, or 2 it fires up after bleeding injection lines.

It is returning fuel to the tank through the injector return lines but my gosh how much cranking do I have to do to get fuel to come out at the injector end lines??

yes I have cracked the top hard fuel line loose at the injector and have cranked a lot. No fuel is coming out.

Before I spent any time or money on it I’d call my local sherriff and run it thru NCIC.

however, the inquiry might come up empty...

I once bought a motorcycle from an estate sale and went to the local cop shop to run the VIN#
and they weren't much help.... basically directed me to DMV

I did end up registering it but needed to provide an afidavid from the seller...

for a old tractor, I'd prolly roll the dice and keep it/restore it.
I don't think anybody is gonna come looking for it.

I'd be sure and document the fact that you were cleaning up the lady's property and she told you that you could have it.

Like discuss this with her by email so you have record of the conversation to keep with her contact info.

That way, you can at least have documentation as to how you took possession in the event it was stolen. I wouldn't think it was stolen but you never know these days.

Could have been a crack head that bought the property and wanted to take up homesteading and he ended up having a heart attack from too much crack and the property ended up being abandoned.

Could have been abandonment thru all sort of scenarios, who knows?
