Lifting 5gal cans of diesel fuel a problem

I keep the 30 gallon Handy tank in the barn and just top it off with five gallon cans. Much easier lift than over the hood to fill the tractor. Then when the tractor needs fuel I can simply crank the pump and watch the fuel gauge on the tractor.

I went through this and my solution was to go to a smaller can. Works for me.

2.5 gal YELLOW fuel can? (maybe Orange?)

Because I'm not as tough (or young) as I used to be, fueling my B7100 with a 5gal fuel can is a PITA. In addition to having to hold up that heavy can, I must reach over/past the FEL, and the filler neck of my tank has a fine strainer screen, so it must be filled very slowly. I think it would be...

I'm still lifting 5 gallon jugs ( did it yesterday ) but can see those days coming to an end as soon as I get get time for a workaround.

I know some have suggested a pump that's driven by an electric drill.

Here's one from home depot for $14. At 750 GPH it should make quick work of a fill.

I've tried that type with UDT. The first one lasted about a year. The second one didn't work at all. They have rubber vanes that aren't compatible with oil. The ones I bought didn't come from the Depot, but I suspect they're all made in China so . . . .

That might be an overkill for me but I am sure it would work fine

I bought a 30 gallon fuel caddy with a hand crank pump. It works well, but there is the process of using the loader to load and unload from the truck bed. I think I will look for a cheap small trailer to use.

I have that exact same caddy. Works great, but I need to use the loader and forks to load and unload.

Thanks for posting - interesting solutions. I have been mulling this over as I have been cranking through diesel these last couple of weeks like never before on my latest project. For me, it is not so much the lifting as it is not being able to get it started without spilling this "liquid gold"...

I have recently learned that PA has the highest diesel tax in the nation (we are top 10 in gasoline). My area is a huge logistics/freight epicenter: + 45cents just this last week

Since I have pallet forks I built a transfer setup on a pallet.

50 gallon tank I got on sale at Farm and Fleet, and on Amazon got the pump and filter, both Fill-Right, made in USA, and both kits less than what the local stores are selling the china bomb stuff at. It's a 15 GPM pump and will fill the tractor in less than a minute.

Under the pallet is a cart I built so I can wheel it around. When I need to fill I just pick it up with the forks and put it in the bed of the truck.

The sad part is, it costs nearly $300 to fill the darn thing these days!!! Going to have to fill it soon though, under a half tank left on the L4060 and I have only just started putting it to work, have 20 hours on it so far, and burned at least 3/4 tank with what it came with and I filled it with.

That’s an awesome solution. I don’t like the price of fuel either, however it’s still better than the alternative. Yes 300$ is a lot, how much could we get out of hiring the same amount of labor to do it? Still a bargain viewed by work that can be completed for the price of fuel…I don’t have to like the price but look what you get at the drive thru at McDonald’s for five bucks…want a crappy burger smashed in a wrapper or would we want $5 of fuel? I can do a lot more with the fuel than I can with the Nourishment of that burger. . That’s a slick Slick set up on the transfer tank.

Yeah I agree, in the long run it gets a lot done, but compared to what I was paying in 2020, it is quite a hit. Back then I could drive to Nebraska towing my 5th wheel RV and have money to pay for the campsite!

This is a perfect solution for someone that uses a lot of fuel. It would be an overkill for me since I only use 10-15 gal a month. But-I still havent seen a fuel transfer pump that I am in love with yet so I am going to leave this option on the table for now. Wonder if there is a 15-20 gal version of this?

I am looking for advise on fuel transfer pumps. It is becoming difficult for me to lift 5 gal cans to fill my tractor (B2601) I would like one with a discharge hose long enough to reach from ground to fill cap on hood. I use about 10-15 gal a month so I do not want to get 55 gal drums and just looking for something to help me fuel the tractor without the heavy lifting.

I have the same tractor as you.
Im 70 now and it’s not a easy task to lift a full 5gal can Up on the tractor.
Just built this little transfer pump to do the job when I get tired of lifting.
Runs off a 12 volt DC supply (Battery charger).
Hose length is 4.5’ long.
Its rated at 30 gph so maybe 9-10 minutes to do the transfer.
In no hurry as I’m retired and have all the time in the world.
Cheap to make.
Like someone else mentioned, transferring from a 5 gal to a 2 gal would be another option.

I got one of these. It seems to work well, only used a few times so far. Empties the 5 gallon can in a couple minutes.

For $10 you can't beat this pump at Harbor Freight. Two D batteries and I've used it for over two years. Simple and cheap.

I can lift/spill or buy a lot of transfer pumps for that!

58 gallon (55 gal useable) was the smallest JohnDow offers with a 12v pump. You could always add your own to a smaller one, I’m sure. I just didn’t want gravity fed or a hand crank, personally. I got this one for $660 delivered but that was with a promos and points I had accumulated.
