My place was acquired by treaty with Comanches and never challenged afterward. I bought it from previous owners.

Texas does indeed have Native American reservations…not many…but some, Alabama-Coushatta, Tigua, and Kickapoo and The Lipan-Apache headquarters are actually in McAllen, Texas.
So was mine.

I went back and did not see where I said anything was bad?
Perhaps I read something into it that wasn't there then. My apologies for doing so.

Linux sits on about 20% of our servers and honestly if some clients didn't demand it, I would drop it in a second. Linux has by far the highest TCO of any servers we maintain. The last two years have been pretty brutal on the maintenance. Meanwhile, the Windows world in the server market has been pretty much lights out for the last few years. TCO on Windows beats linux in our operation 3 to 1 and that is PAYING full price for windows.
I certainly won't argue your experience. I guess it's just that mine's been a little different. Thank you for a fair and reasonable (and off-topic) discussion.

Everyone has the 'right to repair', in this example, however few have the specialized tools, equipment and training to ...
Isn't that not quite the case with the Deere software issue from a few years ago, though?

My point is that Citizens United is just WRONG all-around WRONG.

Unions are prohibited from collecting funds from Members involuntarily.
Workers are often forced to join a union in order to secure or keep a job. Such workers must then pay union dues which the union can use for whatever purposes is chooses. There is nothing voluntary about this.

NRA memberships, contributions, etc., are entirely voluntary.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion regarding any holding, U.S. S. Ct. or otherwise, but such opinions remain just that, opinions rather than facts.

I'm sure that was a fair treaty.
Check out Fredericksburg, Tx history and you’ll learn that in 1840s a mutually agreeable treaty was derived from trading goods and land with the Comanche. It was the only treaty that I know of negotiated between a tribe and private parties still extant not involving the state or federal govt.

Union member ship is never “forced”. Even in closed shops a worker is not required to “join” a union. (In some locales certain dues must be paid even by non-union members if they also share in union-negotiated additional benefits for non-union workers. In many more cases, non union workers get away with “free” additional benefits they did not pay their “fair share” of the costs the union endured to obtain those benefits for workers.)
However, in all cases, Unions are not allowed and do not collect money from members to be used for political purpose except on voluntary basis. I thought you indicated you attended law school.

One may not be "forced" to join a union but one will not get a job in many (most?) union shops unless one does. Workers in some entities must pay union dues even if not members. Unions can and do use membership dues for whatever purposes they choose, political or otherwise. Nothing voluntary about this if you desire to work therein.

Not having any need to have the last word, I will agree to disagree.

“Under union shop agreements, labor unions must establish strict safeguards and procedures for ensuring that non-members' dues are not used to support certain political and ideological activities that are outside the scope of normal collective bargaining activities…..”
In a line of decisions, the Supreme Court has addressed this issue and has concluded that compulsory union dues of non-members may not be used for political and ideological activities…”

” the Court found that a union cannot be allowed to use the dissenting employees' funds even temporarily“ for political purposes.

In summary, union dues may not be used for political purposes that are not directly related to the collective bargaining process. I.E., the union cannot contribute funds to candidates, etc. with dues money. Dues money can only be used for politics that involve collective bargaining rights. This is why unions establish PACs …in order to encourage members to contribute voluntarily towards political candidates/moements/etc…. NOT from “dues”.

As previously stated, I will agree to disagree.

As previously stated, unlike some, I have neither need nor desire to have the last word.

Hopefully you and your family will have have a wonderful Christmas and a healthy and prosperous new year.

Last post on topic.

worked briefly at a shop (couple months)
union job
you either joined the union or you were shunned. Simple as that. I hated the job anyway but needed a paycheck.
dad warned me about it, he was with the UPRR for 41 years and had as much knowledge from all aspects, of unions and how they work. Grandpa was with UPRR for 52 years.
union workers you either join, or you aren't part of the crowd--and they are quick to remind you of that. Note that dad, grandpa, and myself were never "forced", but the membership was requested often. Company get-togethers? Union only, I (and grandpa) were never invited. There were a lot of perks to being a union member of which dad learned early on, and joined in, and actually was higher up on the totem pole of union membership before he shipped out to war. Came back and his job was changed, so he took another....union job...but worked with the UP emp. credit union rather than out in the shop. In 89 that went away with the rest of the stuff in omaha, forced a move to timbuktu and here we are.

Unions are great and they suck at the same time. You'll see me talk about it from time to time, usually negatively but they do have certain positives depending on which way you look at it.
