Well I "accidentally won" an auction for a "gunsmithing lathe" and had to go pick it up the other day.

The ride back to the cottage was "uneventful" but also uneasy. I had it strapped down "good enough" with ratchet straps and 2 chains, but the "top heavy'ness" made the ride back "uncomfortable".

Maybe it was just in my head, but there was this "constant nagging" in my head that if the base snapped it would be "lights out".

I decided to take it apart to transport it home (4 hours on the highway) and I wanted it up against the front rail so that when I hit the brakes it would not slide forward

I used the FEL to "dismount" it from the base, but needed to drag it forward about a few feet.

I tried to slide it by had, but "no bueno"

Then it hit me, "General Jackson" would work perfect

"Snug as a bug in a rug" and almost ready for transport.

A little more disassembly, and "re rigging" and it should be an "easy drive" today.

Its a 2 hp......Not a "beast" by any measure, but it's 4 times the hp of my current Craftsman and 8X my Chi-Com mini...

Is that a shop Fox? I think Grizzly makes them. Nice lathe

Yep, Shop Fox.....I'm not sure if Grizzly makes/made them, but I am 99% positive it is a "re-branded Grizzly"

Not my "forever lathe" but a 'temporary upgrade".



The drive home was absolutely "worry free"


and offloading was a breeze.

The hardest part is backing my trailer into the garage.

Then I had to "drag it back" to the end of the trailer. So I hooked it to the hoist.

Then pulled forward until it was "dragged" to the end of the trailer.

Then lifted the hoist arms up and over the ramp. (only had 1/2 inch to spare)

Then put it on some of those HF furniture dollies just so I can move it around in the garage.

Now I gotta clean it up and figure out how to get it into the basement.

Nice pick up.
Virtually identical to my Birmingham, slight differences in electrical button layout, headstock end cover, and work light.
See if you can find a thin sheet of slippery hard plastic to line the shelves in the base column cabinets.
If you store the chucks, faceplate, steady & follower rests in there, you'll thank me.

As for the move to the basement, this should work pretty well:

Many forget about using the lift arms to unload trailers and truck beds.
Enjoy the lathe…. Now you need a bridge port. Even more bulky to move. Used to load a 43 ft step deck with lathes and mills. Lots of chains an blocks

Chucks & stuff are heavy, door is small and at an awkward level, plastic just makes it easier to slide stuff out to the front.
A lot of stiction without it.
Mine was made from one of those large "wet floor" A frame signs that blew out of a truck on the freeway.

If I remember right, my folding shop crane moved it pretty well (stable) when slung as shown below, and gave lots of easy "wiggle" when trying to line up the holes to bolt the base legs back on.
Mine doesn't have flood coolant, but I sealed the machine-to-chip pan interface with RTV, because maybe someday I might.

I have one for you.

I have a 40' ladder I needed to get to the bill at the top of my barn. That ladder is too heavy and awkward to get it there myself. I anchored it to the backside of the backhoe bucket and set it in place. I anchored it so it would stay, no matter the wind. It's been stored there for 4 years now!
