After a year of owning my first diesel machine, I decided I had better buy a "yellow" five gallon plastic can to distinguish diesel from my several other fuel cans.

I dutifully bought one and filled it up, then brought it home. In a couple of days I needed to fuel my L3901 so I hauled the yellow can to the tractor and started to fill-er-up.

There is some kind of trick gadget on the spout of the plastic can than in effect requires that
the can "rest" against the edge of the filler in order to "push" a valve to allow the flow of fuel from the plastic can to the tractor. It just plain doesn't work, and not only did I spill a lot of fuel, but I made a mess doing it. It must have been a requirement imposed by some federal committee, because no one else could have bungled such a simple thing so dramatically.

If I ever catch the idiot that designed that thing, the best punishment I can think of is that he/she be required to use the thing every day for the entire rest of his/her life. At the end of said life, I intend to place a similar can in the coffin so that Lucifer can continue the
punishment through eternity if so inclined. If the devil has ever had to use one of the things,
I have no doubt that he will be so inclined. There is zero probability that St Peter will be
involved instead.

I have taken the trouble to emasculate the dang can, removing the poorly designed valve system entirely. If I ever find out that one of my ex students is the person who designed this piece of junk I will hunt them down in their place of employment and flunk them back to
Oklahoma kindergarten, with a caveat that they are almost certainly not trainable, but that they should be allowed to play with the fuel can they designed and given a box of matches.

I bought one when I bought my tractor, but I have not had any problems with it, and it has actually prevented some spills for me. Mine must be a different shade of yellow :)

Welcome to the algore gas can revolution...

I still use old chilton type cans, with a vent, they came in red, blue or yellow, and had a vent, that actually allows one to do what one intends them for, pouring fuel, with no spills...:D:D

Geez Buffalo I just blew beer through my nose laughing.

I have smelt like diesel trying to pour fuel into many things with that nozzle. Now I take it off, put a big funnel in the bota and pour right out of that pretty yellow piece of plastic jug.

Works way better and diesel is not parfume to all members of the fairer sex?

Mine is the one with the vent built into spout. Takes 5 minutes to empty a jug. Hate em. Spilled more fuel and gas with those silly contraptions. Mr funnel coming soon.

I bought one of these in the 1.25 gal size (no yellow avail in smaller size - why???)
http://www.nospill.com/Products.html
Makes it very easy to lift and pour into tractor at that size.
They have wide mouths and push button on/off so easy to start and stop flow.
So far the best of the stupid CARB cans (thanks Califonia) that I have used.
Just wish they would make small and all colors.

I have the 5 gal No Spill yellow diesel, and once you cut off the child lock that keeps the whole thing from being unscrewed at the gas station it is ok. You have to hold the button down as you pour but it is pretty easy. I don't put more than 3 gal in it as that is as much as I can lift.

Just use a Super Syphon.

1. realize in your older level of infinite wisdom by planning wiser lol (Im not there yet)
.... A. From step 1 you plan for tractor being filled little slower and leave task(s) to do while your filing like check tire pressure? Check oil?
.... B. Get use to watching fuel level in the tank so you can always stop and fill at about same level of fuel in your tank.
.... C. Only put enough fuel in can to fill tractor tank. Not anymore than that be it from your fuel station at home or up the road

2. Get a stool if your really old or short .... stand on it and lift the fuel can up onto the hood. Not there yet either
.... A. Stick your Super syphon in Can and other end in tractor tank .. shake it a few times and let it do its thing on its own.
.... B. Take on #1. A above
.... C. when syphon breaks remind yourself of number 1. AKA- scoot can far enough down hood so length hose allows metal end to remain bottom of Can.
.... D. While checking tires watch it overflow and remind yourself of #1 B. so you can get to skip #2 E. and ......
.... E. Clean up the fuel you let overflow
.... F. Pour remaining amount (should be none or tiny amount) into a funnel.
if any left.
.... G. Pour from the can the nasty sediment and bit of diesel out of the can onto the weeds you want to kill. AKA Poison Ivy. Don't let Can touch it. (or lay the diesel soaked paper towels from step E. over said weeds.
.... H. Pick up rags later and crumple them together and throw away!!!
.... I. Back to #1. as you realize that is not how to dispose of oily paper towels properly as you watch things burn down with sirens billowing in the background as Firetrucks arrive. (aka search fires started by oily rags) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3i7BMdVf7i8

Odds are you will repeat most steps for at least 3-10 fill ups till your succumb to step #1. fully :p Hopefully most equals never reaching #2. I

I went and bought the EZ pour replacement spout at my farm store and added one of the yellow vents to the back. Works like a charm, just like old times.

For those of you who will be adding a vent to your can, I've found that a 1/2" step drill cuts the cleanest hole and curls the plastic chips back out of the can when drilling.

x2

I did this to all my cans over the last couple of years. The high volume longer nozzle works best for my large cans because none of them are easy to handle when full much less into my tractor which is just tall enough to make it difficult to see what you're doing without getting up on a stand of some sort. Thanks goodness it sips fuel.

I use one of these:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003PGRR70/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I also found that a PVC pipe cap fits perfectly over the spout, keeping debris out when not in use. I store it with the spout turn up as diesel seems to drip for a while after the flow is stopped. So turned up stops that and the cap, keeps the inside clean. :)
I also only buy four gallons at a time. My little BX is so frugal with fuel, Less weight makes filling easier. Even with the light on and the low fuel indicator flashing, it will not take all four gallons (with a 6+ gallon fuel tank).

So far this year I have found 3 red cans and 4 yellow ones along the roads,, sometimes they are pretty squished and worth nothing other times they be in pretty good shape. Seems some people cant figure out empty cans WILL blow off the back of a falt bed pickup truck. Some time half full ones will too :D

X2 on the No-Spill. A great product that works well, though I could see for people with arthritis or weak hands, holding the button down would be a pain for a 5+ gal fillup.

Another option is RACE FUEL cans.

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-g8007-6 (yellow for diesel)

http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS-Performance-Products/555/80213/10002/-1

Both of these will fill your machine FAST and you don't need to worry about any stupid environmental spouts on them.

The JEGS utility ones actually have a threaded bung in the cap so you can put on a 3/4" 1/4 turn valve and flip the can over before letting the fuel flow. We used them on our lemons race car and they worked mint.

Yooper, that cam is pretty slick, looks like you have access to a 3d printer? How much for another one? You should approach no-spill with that one, after getting a patent....

My dad bought a couple of those for filling the tractors and I never even attempted to use the spout, I just took it off and used a funnel. For my new tractor I bought the No-Spill cans and I agree holding the button down is a pain. It's still the best compliant can you can get. I may add vents to them though.

I am with ToyBoy.

I bought ten of the yellow Blitz jugs at Homey 'Po for $1.68 apiece after the poor company was sued out of business. I swapped the nozzles and added the burp vent. They empty in about 2.5 minutes and balance nicely on my fueling board (mounted between the FEL main hinge points) saving my back, while draining.

Actually, it was cut out on a water jet. Used some nylon that was collecting dust. If you have access to something that can cut it out, I'd be happy to send a file of the cam profile- just pm me.
