So, I heard a sudden raspy/clacking noise coming from my B8200. I shut it down and long story short I suspected the water pump bearing was shot as it was wobbly. Replaced it but the noise is still there. This is a 1990 B8200 HST-D 4wd with a BF 350 loader and a 3PH woods BH750. My FEL seems to work fine and the 3PH still has some lift to it, though the BH is mounted so hard to see the full swing of things there. My Hydraulic fluid was changed in the fall using UDT 2 and levels are still holding (though i just noticed a drip at my fel contoller hose the same day the noise occurred). The engine oil was changed twice after i bought this is in the fall using shell rotella T-6 5W 30 and the levels are still holding. Of course the filters (including the large suction screen filter) were replaced when the fluid changes happened. I am hoping this is a cavitation noise due to air in the lines...but something tells me that life is not that easy. Bear with me as I am not by any means a mechanic, but you all have helped me through a few things and i am learning as I go.

Can you place your hand or a small stick on the running engine to determine where a vibration is coming from specifically. Many times it is very hard to hear where a noise is coming from with the engine running.

Does the noise change in pitch or frequency when you increase Rpm's?

Could it be another bearing? Like an idler pulley? (IF you have one)

wobbly water pump....
Any chance the alternator pulley is bent and some fins are hitting the case ?

Good point...i did leave that out. It does increase with RPMs respectively and it also changes when I engage the HST...even though I am not attempting to move the machine, when the pedal is let out the clacking gets a bit worse than when it is disengaged. Also, one more weird thing is my RPMs seem to not want to go below 1000 when I would normally be ~700 at idle. I was also thinking (hoping) it could be the dynamo but Im afraid It may be the hydro pump itself. I havent been running it much but i read that oil could leep back into the gear case so I am going to look at that this morning

Ell...I replace the water pump new and the same noise is there. It is a tight fit in there. I am going to go out there today and take another look around

Might get you one of these gizzmos to help "hear" the noise. You can find them at most auto parts stores.

When I had a similar (sudden, rpm related, varied with clutch pedal) clattering sound from my B7100, it turned out to be the clutch coming apart:

The missing spring was in pieces that ended up jamming the clutch against the housing, stalling the engine. I thought it had seized. Entire adventure detailed here: https://www.orangetractortalks.com/forums/threads/b7100-seized.38836/

It sounds like this, is one of the hardest things to diagnose over the net.
Take a good video of it working the clutch pedal, the HST pedal and up and down on the RPM's, post it on You Tube and give us a link to see or better hear it!

now it appears to be the dynamo bearing,,,I hope. I chase the noise down and it is definately coming from the front of the motor. You would think this would be easier to pin down. Ill have the front end rebuilt before i find it ;-). Im going to pull the belt off and check the dynamo for play. One may think i would do that when i had it apart

It may be a a while but Ill report my findings. I read that the bearing can be replaced but i will need to find one. The RPMs have settled out so maybe my throttle was sticky>>>????...anyway, here is a video. First time loading to you tube so lets see if this works.

#1 easy test, remove fanbelt, run engine,if noise goes away..pump or dynamo
#2 easy test, spin dynamo by hand. it should be smoooth and quiet.

OK...I promised I would report back and I am happily embarrassed. It turned out the bottom portion of the shroud was bent and the fan blade was grazing it; making the noise. I must have bent it a bit while putting it back in and didnt realize it. Its just thin sheet metal.

If you narrowed it down to the front of the motor. Pull the belt and check the pulleys. You should be able to feel it if a bearing is getting wonky. Or a pully could flop some.

Thank you. Turns out the fan was contacting the shroud

This. Try it. You will be amazed at what you can hear. No mechanic should be without one, whether DIY or professional.
