What do I need to know to repower my tractor

I have a bit of a mongrel tractor. And it's got a broken crankshaft. Looks like my best option might be to repower with a new engine - problem is finding out what to use to fit it.

The problem is
1) It's an L1501 from the transmission backwards (L1501 - S/N 12875)
2) The engine is a 3 cylinder, with 1115cc stamped on the side, which suggests a D110x engine.
3) The injector pump serial number is Z750-48645. This suggests that the 2 cylinder injector pump has been fitted to a 3 cylinder engine.
4) I can't seem to find anything that identifies the engine block any better than that.

So the question is - how can I find out what engine to use to repower?

1) Should I looks for a D110x engine and hope for the best
2) Should i look for a Z750 engine (original for the L1501) and hope whoever changed the engine over didn't modify anything.
3) Could I even go with a modern D1105.

What do i need to know to figure out if a new engine is going to fit.

1) Bell housing mounts?
2) Flywheel specs?
3) Engine mount specs?
4) Manifolds (assuming new engine doesn't come with them)?

All help would be much appreciated.

Check the serial number plate, look really closely at what it says under the serial number. Doing some internet searches, it showed several l1501's powered by a 3 cylinder yanmar diesel. Here's a pic of my serial number plate. Under serial number it shows that it has the z751 motor

All kidding aside, if there is a way to get that little orange piggy working again, the guys here will be a good resource. Send us lots of pictures. We call them "tractor porn." This will be fun to watch...

The serial number plate is really hard to read as it's been painted over with a thick paint, but I think I've chipped enough off to read that it's virtually identical to yours.

15 PSI
3000 rpm

are the only English on the plate. The Japanese looks close to yours or identical (from what I can see). It's possible I have a Yanmar engine in it - although most of those seem to have the ZL model number. I'll keep searching - thanks for the tips.
 
Ray - everyone hates a smartass :D

No-one needed to hold a gun to my head - she was a beautiful little tractor, well looked after - much nicer than other similar ones I'd seen. Started and ran beautifully - right up until the day a few weeks ago that the crankshaft broke.

I knew it was a bit of a mongrel from the start, but never realised quite what a Frankentractor I had until I needed some serious parts.

Can I ask how you determined the model number - I've been trying to determine a definitive answer for weeks now, but I couldn't figure out what numbers were definitive.

I'll store that page up for when I split the tractor and get the motor out - then I can start comparing.

Mike, can you get some really good close up pics of the motor, how it bolts to the front end, and so on?

Theres a bunch of us with the z751 motors. And I'm sure that i'm not the only one who is curious on how it was done.

The CC's and the cylinder count put together tell the size and type of the engine, the version # comes from the age or a good guess.
First it's a 3 Cylinder that tells me it is a D motor.
Second the CC's 1115 crosses to a 1101 Model # .

Theres lots field parked and forgotten gray markets around here for cheap. I'm thinking more power some time down the road :D:D:D

D1101A are in L225. L245 and more
D1102A are in L235 and more
D1102AE are in L2050, L2350 and more

Yes they are, so I guess in theory it could also be a D1102A But much less likely due to it's age and model.

for my opinion you have a l2201 kubota, i see that your hood is longer than my l1501,
and i think that its an l2201 or the half of it, we have a lot of them here in Greece.
as for the transmission is the same as my l1501 and it bolts right in place,

so you may have 2 tractors bolt together, because the 1501 and 1801 and 2201 use the exactly rear end with only different engines, everything is the same in the transmission, steering column, hydraulic pump, etc...
look for example at this photo here,

this part is the same to this 3 models.
so if you re-power your kubota put and some new stickers with the l2201 on it.

Alexisferos, do you have a copy of the l1501 parts manual in pdf form? Or a copy of the l1501 parts manual you could scan?

Hi Alexisferos - or Daren Todd. If someone can measure the length of the hood on an L1501 we might be able to confirm Alexisferos' theory. It certainly sounds reasonable, particularly if everything back from the engine is the same
39 3/4 inches or 1.009 meters, 100.965 centimeters.

Measured center of hood from where it juts out by the lights to the seam at the end by the dash

Sorry for the "smart-assed reply." I didn't realize till I saw the pictures how young you were. Does your mom know you are online? :D

I take it all back. The tractor is a cutie. I envisioned some kind of rust-clad smoke-belching tractor from hell with dents, four different tires (tyres :rolleyes:) and three inches of free-play in the steering. You know, your basic Eastern-bloc pride and joy.

These guys will get you pointed in the right direction. You may have to rob several banks to bankroll a new engine but hey, its worth it right?
